The January 2019 Press Room Shanty, Forebitter, and Foc's'l Ballad Session will be this Saturday, January 19th from 2:00 to 6:00 at the THE PRESS ROOM, 77 Daniel Street, Portsmouth, NH.

The holidays and conflicts and family commitments are over, so I hope everyone is ready to SING!

Our weekly Anglo-Celtic trad session has also returned to The Press Room as you may have heard, but it has migrated (of necessity) to Sunday afternoons (instead of the traditional Fridays) from 2:00 to 5:00. And I am continuing to run a weekly mixed trad session at the Continental (Chinese restaurant) north of Dover on Fridays from 4:30-8:00.

Hope to see you all at the newly renovated PRESS ROOM this Saturday!

Linn

There's a parking advisory in effect for Saturday...

Pleasant Street from Book & Bar to Market Square will be closed to traffic for the Women's March.

I think Daniel/Congress Street through Market Square will be open to traffic, but parking in the vicinity may be complicated. I hope the marchers, etc. will use the new parking garage at the other end of Congress.

There also may be some wintry weather both Saturday and Sunday, but it's too early to predict what the driving conditions will actually be.

According to the weather predictions, it won't snow until Saturday night into Sinday. So the weather shouldn't be a problem on Saturday.

But it bears watching...

Hope to make it, as long as I'm not swept away by the women's march!

According to WMUR's hourly forecast this morning, it probably won't snow TODAY until after 5 p.m. I hope it will hold off until we're all safely home.

But as for the weekly trad session TOMORROW... Well, if the driving sucks (that's a technical weather term), I won't be at The Press Room.

I had stuff planned for today. Press Room (an hour away), then off to Gloucester (another hour), but it would start snowing shortly after I got to Gloucester, and there's the women's march in Portsmouth, and it's quite possible I'll just give up ahead of time, and try to get the snice off my porch. (Is that last one not the longest sentence fragment ever?)

Well...

I got to The Press Room early (as usual) for Saturday's singaround (after finding a place to park -- despite the Women's March -- a little over a block away), and Dominic (one of the servers) looked at me quizzically and said, "Wasn't this cancelled?" I hadn't received any word...although it might not have been a real surprise, what with the iffy weather (the next day we cancelled Sunday's trad session) and the Women's March.

So I had a long talk with the manager of the day, who called the owner. I knew Don Hale was coming from quite a distance and I really didn't want him to have to turn around and go home!

So we had a rather private session (meaning no audience) upstairs, but we had to wrap by 5:00 to make way for the band for that night. What a wonderful space to sing in! I think it may actually be better than the Portsmouth Athenaeum's downstairs reading room (where the PMFF has performances).

Staff kindly sent singers upstairs as each arrived, but we were a small group -- me, Don, Dianne, Paul, Mike, and Alan. Gail D. was also there early to listen, but she joined in on choruses, too.

And we were able to leave when it had just started to snow lightly -- flakes in the air, but not yet causing tricky driving.

What we sang --

1. Sailor's Prayer [Tom Lewis] - Linn
2. Boney Was a Warrior - Dianne
3. Black Ball Line - Don
4. River Driver - Paul
5. Race of Long Ago - Linn
6. Bold Riley - Don
7. The Jeannie C. - Dianne
8. All For Me Grog - Paul
9. The Lobster - Linn (somehow the subject of "cleaning up" songs arose, so I just HAD to sing this...especially since there were no young, innocent ears in attendance)
10. Three Score and Ten - Don
11. Quare Bungle Rye - Mike
12. similar story of a girl selling apples & pears - Dianne
13. Paddy Lay Back - Paul
14. Big Bow Wow - Don
15. Whiskey-O, Johnny-O - Linn
16. General Taylor - Dianne
17. Sugar In The Hold - Alan
18. The Morning Glory - Mike
19.Gray,Foggy Day - Don
20. Bonnie Bunch of Thyme - Dianne
21. Cruisin' 'Round Yarmouth - Linn
22. Whup Jamboree - Alan
23. Botany Bay - Alan (Tooralie, tooralie, Annie)
24. Strike the Bell - Paul
25. Backside of Nantucket Point - Linn
26. The Rosabella - Dianne
27. Bold Riley - Alan
28. Get Up and Go [Pete Seeger] - Mike
29. Woolamaloo Liar - Alan
30. Weeping Willow Tree - Don
31. Seaman's Prayer - Don and the Company

That's it. As usual, please let me know of any errors or omissions.

Thanks for coming!

When I got home and rummaged around, I found an email in my Spam folder that cancelled Sunday's session, but didn't exactly cancel Saturday's. And no voicemail messages, although the email had said Chris was trying to reach me by phone. I'll keep you posted.

Linn

Thanks Linn,
For those of you who haven't been to the Athenaeum and didn't understand what Linn meant, the acoustics are amazing!

Thanks for the list. I really wouldn't have been able to raise a song with my nose and lungs clogged with evil greasy yellow gobs. But I was there in spirit!
