Subject: Phil Cunningham & Aly Bain play country From: Felipa Date: 26 Apr 19 - 03:43 PM I went to see a film, "Wild Rose", about a Glaswegian woman with personal problems and a dream to be a country singer. I was surprised to recognise Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain in the backing band. The singer "Rose" is Jessie Buckley. |

Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: GUEST,Pseudonymous Date: 27 Apr 19 - 04:33 AM Two brilliant musicians, well worth seeing if you can. |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: GUEST,Ake Date: 27 Apr 19 - 04:44 AM I am reliably informed by young local performers that "Folk Music" is now an industry. Personally I think it loses something in translation? |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: GUEST Date: 27 Apr 19 - 04:55 AM of course it's an 'industry'- all sorts of things which were actually FUN are now categorised as an industry- like football and sex... |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: GUEST,ake Date: 27 Apr 19 - 05:19 AM I agree GUEST, but does it have to be so? The Folk music I grew up on was transmitted for the benefit of the community, not the benefit of the performers. That does not mean that there is no place for working singers writers or musicians, but the ethos of the music is being lost. |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: Andy M Date: 27 Apr 19 - 06:45 AM Non story; Aly Bain is a genuine traditional musician, unlike many of us who came through folk clubs or whatever. What he does with his talent is up to him, he always has that. |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: GUEST,Jerry Date: 27 Apr 19 - 07:32 AM Out of interest, what is that film like? It has had a lot of publicity, but the trailer looks like yet another predictable/formulaic rags to riches, Star is Born type movie, which the world probably doesn’t need any more of, or is it actually worth watching? |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: gillymor Date: 27 Apr 19 - 02:05 PM Looks like an interesting flick and Phil and Aly's presence makes it more so, I hope it makes it here to the states. IMDB entry |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 27 Apr 19 - 06:06 PM Don't want to put a spoiler but no it isn't a rags to riches story. I enjoyed the film. Ally and Phil are only in the film very briefly with very little playing. Though they do play American stuff too re the Transatlantic Sessions on TV etc. |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: leeneia Date: 27 Apr 19 - 06:16 PM I'm happy for Phil and Aily. It's nice to be noticed. Phil ate dinner at my home once and couldn't get the peppergrinder to work. Do British-Isles peppergrinders grind counterclockwise? American grinders go clockwise. |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: Big Al Whittle Date: 27 Apr 19 - 09:54 PM Never keen on the Transatlantic Sessions - its the way they all keep smirking at each other. I think musicians should snarl at each other like Joan Jett singing I like Rock and Roll. |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: Felipa Date: 28 Apr 19 - 08:15 AM guest, Jerry The film is okay and Jesse sings well though I got bored with the formula of starting EVERY song with a quiet solo building to stronger voice with accompaniament. And don't knock "A Star is Born"; I thought the remake of the film very well done. Such a sad story, though ... |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: leeneia Date: 28 Apr 19 - 08:52 AM People who sing with a pleasant expression sound better. If you can't smile with your lips, smile with your eyes. People who frown when they sing are closing up their faces and their windway. Scowl hard and feel what happens inside your head. |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aily Bain play country From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 28 Apr 19 - 09:39 AM As far as I remember slhe only actually does three full songs in the film and I thought they were all quite different. The first one when she rejoins her band is a raunchy rocker that kicks off full tilt right from the start. The second is in Nashville just her voice with one fiddle joining her. And the third at the end which is the ballad that starts just with her voice and builds. |
Subject: RE: Phil Cunningham & Aly Bain play country From: GUEST,Jerry Date: 28 Apr 19 - 06:56 PM I haven’t seen the latest version of A Star is a Born, so would not knock it, but I’ve seen the previous versions and so many other films with the same plot line, from The Jazz Singer (1929) onwards. I suppose there is an enduring appeal to these underdog to superstar stories that keeps drawing us back for more; let’s face it, the James Bond franchise have been churning out the same film every couple of years since 1962’s Doctor No, with just a change of villain, female accomplice and exotic locations. |
