Subject: Lyr Add: CALL OF THE WHIPPOORWILL (Pete Goble) From: Joe Offer Date: 05 May 19 - 12:41 AM Well, Harpy, it appears that Pete Goble (1932-2018) was born in Kentucky, but moved to Detroit in 1948 and lived in Michigan much of his life. We Detroiters oughta come up with a transcription, don'tchathink? Don't know if I'll have time for the whole thing tonight, but I'm make a start. I like storytelling songs like this. It's a nice little melodrama. CALL OF THE WHIPPOORWILL (Pete Goble) The cabin window flickered from a candle standing there, A signal to the shadow in the pines; For I stood there in silence, waiting for the candle's glare, To tell me once again that she'd be mine. The moonless night was perfect for an hour of stolen love, Her husband must have lingered at the mill; With my horse tied in the shadows, I walked to the cabin door, That opened to the call of Whippoorwill. CHORUS Whippoorwill, whippoorwill, when nights are dark and everything is still, Whippoorwill, whippoorwill, she waited for my call of whippoorwill. The cabin loft was dark as she lingered in my arms, Longer than we both knew would be wise; Then a wagon broke the silence, as it came up in the yard, I felt the fear that leaped into her eyes. The cabin door sprung open, he walked across the floor, Climbed the ladder to the loft above; His lantern lit the darkness, then came a sudden roar, It killed a man who dared to steal his love. CHORUS. I sleep beneath the pinewoods, she visits me at times, When nights are dark and everything is still; And while she places flowers there upon my grave, She hears a lonely callin' whippoorwill.
