Subject: Obit: Colin Ross From: GUEST,Little Robyn Date: 01 Jun 19 - 10:24 PM Colin Ross, Northumbrian piper and fiddler from The High Level Ranters, husband of the late Ray Fisher, maker of small pipes, ex-President of the Northumbrian Piper's Society, sadly passed away last Monday, 27th May 2019. Colin influenced many people in the piping world and his knowledge as a pipemaker will be sadly missed. Robyn |

Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Colin Ross, Northumbrian piper From: GUEST Date: 02 Jun 19 - 05:28 AM A great loss. He played fiddle on one of the eternal classics: Ray Fisher's (his wife's) version of The Bonny Birdy, still a sublime musical moment. |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Colin Ross, Northumbrian piper From: Waddon Pete Date: 02 Jun 19 - 08:39 AM A great loss indeed. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread. My condolences to all who know and love him. RIP Peter |
Subject: Obit: Colin Ross From: Herga Kitty Date: 16 Jun 19 - 08:40 AM Having spotted that there is no mention of Colin Ross on the In Memoriam thread, I've realised that there doesn't seem to be an obit thread for Colin either, although Tom Gilfellon reported on Facebook that Colin passed away on 27th May(about 8 years after his wife, Ray Fisher). I first heard Colin when John Heydon booked The High Level Ranters for the Herga club and ceilidh back in the 1960s. Colin was a fine musician (and the first person I heard playing Northumbrian pipes) and there are many people much better qualified than I am, especially from the north-east, to pay tribute to his contribution to the British folk world. Kitty I transferred a couple posts into this thread, and will delete the duplicate. --Mod |

Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Colin Ross, Northumbrian piper From: GUEST,Chris H Date: 29 Jul 19 - 07:52 AM What a wonderful and talented man. Colin made my pipes and they are a daily joy to me. Now every time I play them I will say a quiet thank you to Colin. I only found out today! |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Colin Ross, Northumbrian piper From: Little Robyn Date: 29 Jul 19 - 11:52 PM Colin's family didn't want a fuss and those who knew him best were asked to keep things quiet. Many good people were not told and I believe his funeral was a lot smaller than it should have been. Robyn |

Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Colin Ross, Northumbrian piper From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 03 Aug 19 - 01:46 PM I remember a comment about there being only one fiddle player and one piper at the original TMSA Blairgowrie festival in 1966, and they were both Colin Ross- it was in a 'Chapbook' article by Archie Fisher, I think? |
