so, what about CANADA on the time zone list? don't we count? yes, I know you can follow it from the cities in the good ol' US of A but, hey, ........

and of course being on the west coast, we get to watch the rest of the world fall apart with the millenium bug while we wait in anticipation for our turn!!!!.....

(who says we can't have some fun here?!?)

And as I watch PBS, I wonder why they had to muck up trad New Zealand songs by making them operatic! Kiri Te Kanawa has a fantastically beautiful voice, but I would've preferred hearing the songs sung traditionally! Bah humbug!

Not sure about Kiribati's time - NZ's certainly been maintaining it's first. Maybe daylight saving's not been taken into account. Hey Kat, re Trad songs from NZ - if it's Maori songs you're referring to, the melodic "popular" ones were developed after the arrival of European. True traditional Maori waiata are chants - much like the Haka (a challenge issued by men, and commonly seen at sports) or the Karanga (a sole female voice of welcome/greeting). So it is OK for an operatic presentation. Wishing you all well - Ana

What is EST? How does it descend from the grandfather GMT? How did George ever let go???

EST is East Standard Time.
(East meaning the east coast of the USA)
It is derived from GMT in the following way:

Grandfather: GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)
Father: UTC (Universal Time Coordinated, which is nothing else but a new name for GMT).
EST is 5 hours (if I did not get my calculations wrong) behind UTC
