I don't see any equivalent thread, so this is to note the passing of Mose Scarlett (also Leon Redbone, about whom someone else might want to speak, as I did not know him). Some details are here:

https://www.torontomoon.ca/two-ol-time-music-icons-and-pals-pass-on-same-day-rip-mose-scarlett-and-leon-redbone/

I got to know Mose through Rick Fielding, a bosom friend if there ever was one. Mose was a character (known perhaps primarily through his trio with Whitely and Washington), and he would often regale us with his endless, and endlessly divergent tales. He was a wonderful gravel voiced old time guitarist in his way, and I once assisted him to the point of getting a mention on an album of his (I wear this trivial assistance with absurd pride). I spent not enough time with him, but it was all golden. Apart from his music, perhaps his longest running show was his also endless tangles with various institutions.

What can I say. I loved the guy. I would certainly invite all others with memories to add them here.

yours ever,

Peter T.

When I first met him at the Fielding's, I remember if he started telling you a story, you were gonna be there a while. He didn't drink water. He drank cola. He liked a good single malt. He had a strong personal style of playing guitar. He was generous with his time and attention, and he was kind. I didn't know him very well, and I can't remember the last time I saw him, but I'm very glad for the times I did have.

I saw him playing at a small folk club back in the eighties in Crewe. He was, as Peter says, a fine singer and guitarist as well as a very entertaining storyteller. I hope he enjoyed his time among us and that his passing was not too hard.

Mose was a very accomplished musician. Have a look at his You Tube videos. Sorry that he has left us. My condolences to his friends and family and all those that love him.

RIP

Peter

Sorry to hear that. We hosted a gig in Edinburgh a few years back.

We had the good fortune to be Managers for a Mose Scarlett Australian tour. He also stayed with us on two occasions when he was in Australia.
A great friend, entertainer. Sadly missed.

I met Mose in Germany when he came to visit mutual friends there in about 1983. I didn't know him well, but over the two or three weeks that we socialized, he made a lasting impression. I saw him perform in a couple of German clubs where he proved that music is the universal language. He was a gentle flame and an old soul.
