Subject: Songs in various dialects from around England From: David W Date: 28 Jul 19 - 08:15 PM An example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuynxRH9k1Q I've been into studying England's dialects for a long time now, never really looked into folk music though. Any songs from around the country people know, if they're completely un-understandable to anyone not from the UK, all the better. |

Subject: RE: Songs in various English dialects From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 19 - 06:17 AM VARIOUS ARTISTS OWDHAM EDGE – POPULAR SONG & VERSE FROM LANCASHIRE TSDL204 Until Topic Records featured Harry Boardman singing six Lancashire songs on the 1965 LP ‘New Voices’, available recordings of songs with their roots in the North West of England were scarce. The growing demand for such material led to the release of ‘Deep Lancashire’ in 1968 and then, in 1970, ‘Owdham Edge’, featuring Harry Boardman once again, as well as the first recordings by one Mike Harding. |
Subject: RE: Songs in various English dialects From: Jim Carroll Date: 29 Jul 19 - 06:43 AM One of the best examples of Lancashire dialect I can remember in a folk song was MacColl's obscene version of 'Seven Night's Drunk' - entitled 'T'owd Chap Cam 'ower t' Bank, originally recorded from Beckett Whitehead There's a rather interesting collection of Yorkshire songs in the 'Musical Traditions' pipeline, recorded originally as a PhD by Colin Wharton - I assume it will be entitled, 'Songs of the North Riding' as was the PhD collection Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: Songs in various English dialects From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 04 Aug 19 - 10:13 PM As a Yank... I found the singing of the werzel song, "Wer Be The Blackbird He" totally incomprehensible when sung by a Yorkshire lad. Even more incomprehensible was the castration of piglettes, and the making of Srampy with a rat in the brew. Sincerely, Gargoyle A bell ringer, Church of England, Isle of Jersey, gave me insight and a fluid translation. |
