Subject: Chartist Hymnal From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 01 Aug 19 - 03:46 AM I have just become aware of the only known Chartist Hymnal which is kept in Todmorton Library. In 2013 a CD was made of the songs. (See link). Does anyone know anything more about it - tunes, words, etc.? Liberty is Near - Garth Hewitt |
Subject: RE: Chartist Hymnal From: Felipa Date: 03 Aug 19 - 03:43 PM interesting shouldn't the date given for "The People's Charter" be 1838, rather than 1938?! Maybe the page will be corrected soon. |
Subject: RE: Chartist Hymnal From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 03 Aug 19 - 04:28 PM Well it is a university web page.... There is a interesting flow of events fro the Peterloo massacre to the Reform Act onto the Ch artist Movement. Not far form me is what was the Chartist settlement of Heronsgate complete with pub: Land of Liberty Peace and Plenty. So so]called because the Land of Peacde and Plenty was a chartist slogan, and Liberty because they were also a temperance movement. A little bit of local irony. |
