The large poster ad on back of Saturday's Times Review shows a wonderful line up for this festival. However, embedded in the design header is the statement ' All Music is Folk Music' ! - I don't think that Voodoo Child or Big Eyed Beans from Venus or Toxic or Don't Sleep in the Subway Baby qualify. Not an attempt to reopen the 'What is Folk' thing. Who designs this stuff?

I saw that too. More "Arts" than "Folk", methinks. And I didn't think it was a "wonderful" line up at all.
"Who designs this stuff ?" Does it matter ?

I imagine it's a case of appealing to a big range of people and hoping they find something or other that will do.

Like any big festival wanting to get bigger, they have to appeal to to a wider audience to get bigger.

Is Cambridge that exclusively folkie? Is Shreswbury that honest about its claim? Towersey hides behind the fact that they have always called it a "Village Festival", but Joan Armatrading, despite being a singer songwriter, is not Folk. And this year who is (are) the Selector, Newton Faulkner? And was Steve Harley ever Folk? If it wasn't for the fact that their dance list was so inviting would folkies attend? But I won't be joining the 4 ballet workshops, THEY are not FOLK.

FWIW, at Towersey, most years ALL the ceilidh bands put together were paid less than the headline act, one who thought he should hector the audience on how to vote! Is that Folk?

Getting bigger isn't folk, it is business.

If you want the festivals to survive - it needs new blood to attend, and they have different influences. I well remember when Bob Dylan was regarded as infra-dig to the old guard of folkies.
I am now the old guard, and understand how the old guard of old times felt. When my legs give up, will I give up on festivals?
