Subject: RE: Most defiantly joyful song? From: Steve Shaw Date: 13 Sep 19 - 11:56 AM We know. We couldn't resist. ;-) |
Subject: RE: Most defiantly joyful song? From: leeneia Date: 13 Sep 19 - 12:01 PM 1. I won't link to the BBC article, because BBC music messes with my own music software. 2. I listened to part of the recording. It does not sound joyful. There is no trace of a smile in Miriam's voice, and it seems like a song of protest or ridicule. |
Subject: RE: Most defiantly joyful song? From: lefthanded guitar Date: 13 Sep 19 - 12:56 PM (Reposting - first post seems to have been erased) Read the BBC article ( I think) on Google, then went to the song. I did not find the story of the song depressing - thought it was upbeat and lyrical and I was amazed at how timeless it sounded. I can see why it survived so long. And it outlasted apartheid - perhaps because it was a celebration of living ( defiantly happy in the face of crushing oppression) . |

Subject: RE: Most defiantly joyful song? From: Jim Carroll Date: 13 Sep 19 - 02:57 PM Joy of lLiving always brings tears to my eyes (probably because I only hear it at funerals nowadays) but it's pretty definitely joyful (like the feller wot rote it) Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: Most defiantly joyful song? From: Mrrzy Date: 13 Sep 19 - 06:13 PM Lemme creep over to songs others find uplifting but I can't stand: amazing grace (I am not a wretch, and neither are you), also usually heard at funerals. |
Subject: RE: Most defiantly joyful song? From: Steve Shaw Date: 13 Sep 19 - 08:08 PM Damned fine tune though, and, in my experience, no-one knows the words beyond the first line anyway... |
Subject: RE: Most defiantly joyful song? From: leeneia Date: 13 Sep 19 - 10:16 PM You're not the only one who doesn't like "wretch". I don't either, and I've seen versions that go Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved and set me free... Nonetheless, I have told the DH that if he permits Amazing Grace to be sung at my funeral, I will come back and haunt him. |
Subject: RE: Most defiantly joyful song? From: gillymor Date: 14 Sep 19 - 06:55 AM I don't waste time with songs I don't care for. Life's too short. Back to the O.P, my wife and I were preparing dinner last night and Pata Pata started playing on my Happy Stuff Spotify playlist and we danced in the kitchen. Another joyful song Enjoy Yourself by Jim Kweskin Also the Byrds version of Dylan's You Ain't Going Nowhere. |
