This is a very familiar refrain in children's games ...... etc.
(There are already many examples on other threads. Just curious about the phrase itself)
I'm just really wondering what it is referring to. Are its origins with hand sewing, or factory machine bobbin shifting, or somebody's name, or a nonsense rhyme ????????
So many possibilities come to mind. Does anybody have some info?

This doesn't answer the question directly, but it may help in your search for the etymology of the phrase.
