Last Sunday's Early Music Show was about the 16th Century dance manual by 'Arbeau'. Available for 3 more weeks.

"Choreographer and dance historian Darren Royston joins Lucie Skeaping to explore the 16th-century dancing manual Orchesographie, published in 1589 by Thoinot Arbeau."

An interesting programme, a lot of talk about dance of the time, with suitable music playing, though I would have liked more details about each track (name of tunes and players), but maybe I missed some of it. I still have it saved to listen to again.

It's not that I don't care, but if I click on the BBC, it might turn off the sound for my composition program (Noteworthy) or it might tell me I'm not qualified to listen.

Too bad, I would like to hear about Arbeau.

You’re allowed to listen to radio broadcasts - it’s just the TV programmes that they won’t let you re-play. You can access it through any web browser page. Radio 3 is the BBC’s classical music station, and you might also like Radio 4, which is mainly spoken word, with a lot of interesting documentaries, interviews, etc. Beeb radio is a gold mine.

I can’t see how it could mess up the sound for Noteworthy in any permanent way....? But I’m not familiar with that software.

That sounds like a question that deserves it's own thread. I never really got to grips with Noteworthy, didn't really need to when I first looked at it, and now I use abc (very haltingly)

Wouldn't this just be a matter of stopping the audio or closing the browser tab? BBC's iPlayer works through the computer's own sound system, hence is easily controlled. I've listened for years, on both Mac & Windows laptops, iPads & other mobile devices, and never had a problem. So I'm not sure how it could interfere with Noteworthy in any way that couldn't be easily switched off, if two sound sources ran simultaneously...? And if you listen to radio independently, without the music software running?

As for Noteworthy, bully programs know how to mess with it whether it's on or off. The Evil Software seems to be saying, "Hey! I want that soundcard. I need to control these speakers! I'll just de-activate the current connections to them and replace them with my own. Permanently." They get their way whether Noteworthy is active or not.

When I open my beloved Noteworthy and find it can't play its own little synthesizer, I press

Tools
Options
Midi
Okay

and that usually fixes it. In other words, I am affirming settings that were right before the Evil Software did something mysterious to them. Sometimes I have to restart my computer and get the computer itself to set the sound settings anew.

Sometimes the Evil Program is some other video or music player (but not YouTube.)

Leenia I tried with nwc playing a tune then at the same time starting the radio 3 recording. No problem apart from the cacaphony! Although the Arbeau doesn't start till well into the recrding. The first few minutes is for someone of a different taste to mine!

That bloody iPlayer is what my wife uses on her iPhone to listen to spoken word stuff at bedtime. I always come to bed later, and she's usually fallen asleep with it still going. So I have to some way or other find the widget that turns it off without waking her up. Since the player keeps going in the background, this is pigging difficult, even after getting through the passcode on the lock screen. Sometimes I just give up and power the phone off rather than play Simon Says with the damn thing.

Ripov, the problem isn't that NWC can't play a file. The problem is that after certain programs have had their way with it, it can't hear and notate the music I play on the synthesizer (technically, the MIDI controller).

Jack, yes indeed. It is always good to remember that we have the ultimate power over gadgets. We can press OFF, pull the plug or remove the battery. Like the creatures in Flatland, who don't conceive of 3D, electronic gadgets cannot conceive of hands performing physical operations.
