Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Ginger Baker From: Backwoodsman Date: 06 Oct 19 - 07:18 AM Thanks Gilly. He was one of the Greats. |
Subject: RE: Obit: RIP Ginger Baker From: gillymor Date: 06 Oct 19 - 07:30 AM I didn't mean to damn him with faint praise but after an initial infatuation upon hearing his playing on the live cuts on Wheels of Fire my interests went off in another direction. Judging from that obit he was certainly a colorful character and it sounds like he had an interesting life. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-1919) From: voyager Date: 06 Oct 19 - 09:44 AM Forget the heavenly choir or Gabriel's Horn the celestial orchestra shall be playing skins, traps, tom-toms and cymbals for Ginger Baker, a human dynamo on drums - Cream Farewll Concert at Albert Hall Interview with GB around 34:30 and extended drum solo continues to the 45 minute mark. Rock on Ginger Baker (RIP) voyager |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: punkfolkrocker Date: 06 Oct 19 - 11:46 AM The only Glastonbury Festival I ever went to was 1981. The highlight being the onstage punch up between Ginger and Roy Harper https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/hawkwindforum/roy-harper-vs-ginger-baker-glastonbury-1981-t1083.html Unfortunately, I missed it as a few minutes earlier I'd wandered off obliviously into a field to the side of the stage to violently throw my guts up until I passed out... When I eventually staggered back and found my girlfriend and our mates, they told me I'd missed an epic spectacle of rock history in the making... Oh well blame it all on the festival cider...??? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-1919) From: GUEST,akenaton Date: 06 Oct 19 - 12:57 PM Watched a documentary about Ginger Baker a few months ago. He came across as a typical ageing rock star......not very likeable and completely consumed by himself, however, may he RIP. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-1919) From: StephenH Date: 06 Oct 19 - 01:10 PM As I was a teenager in the 60s, Cream was a huge part of my listening life. Ginger Baker always loomed large (in more ways than one) as a colourful character. Yes, the documentary, showed him as an irascible old geezer - from the stories I've read, he was always a bit that way. Interestingly, what I most remember him for is his rendition of "Mother's Lament" on "Disraeli Gears." As a father later in life, I used to sing it to my girls as a bedtime song! Anyway, thanks for all the music, Ginger. RIP |

Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-1919) From: John MacKenzie Date: 06 Oct 19 - 03:52 PM I was/am a Cream fan, and loved everything they did, right down to Pressed Rat and Warthog (Think Cutty Wren on steroids) Baker just didn't give a shit about most things, and I once watched him being interviewed live, by some so called rock pundit, and he just took the piss out this pundit, big time. When asked how he played using two pedal bass drums, he said "Like this man", and launched into a deafening drum solo. Oh how I laughed. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 06 Oct 19 - 04:34 PM What I recall about Ginger Baker, more than his musicmaking, was that when he was young and famous, he gave some remarkable interviews. Of course, with age, he became even worse to live with, so the footage of him in recent years doesn't quite convey the character and the personality of his wicked youthful years. He was old enough, during the second war and the blitz, to sense what was going on, even though he was a very small child. And what I recall is that he was thrilled by the explosions! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: Bonzo3legs Date: 06 Oct 19 - 06:13 PM I was once commanded to fuck off by Ginger Baker outside the London Marquee - I only asked him what time they were due on stage!! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 07 Oct 19 - 06:45 PM I saw him live with Ginger Bakers Army, in the drum battle with Elvin Jones at the Lyceum ballroom in London. What a night! The band played some pretty weird songs as I remember. One was called 'Lady Godiva's Elephants' The drum battle was epic! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: Bat Goddess Date: 07 Oct 19 - 06:48 PM Blind Faith only existed from about April 1969 until November 1969. I saw Blind Faith at the Midwest Rock Festival in July 1969 -- it was held at State Fair Park, West Allis (satellite suburb of Milwaukee), Wisconsin. About a two miles or so from where I was living with my parents. Cream, too, was a major part of the soundtrack of my life in the late Sixties. Linn |

Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: gillymor Date: 07 Oct 19 - 07:12 PM Hey, Nick Dow, were you referring to Ginger Baker's Air Force? and wow, I'd heard that he had challenged Elvin Jones but I didn't realize it actually happened, that must have been something. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: Big Al Whittle Date: 08 Oct 19 - 05:25 AM I used to like Cream, until the drum solo's. That fucking Toad track they used to do. I remember thinking when you pay for a double LP - and two thirds of the group piss off..... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: Johnny J Date: 08 Oct 19 - 05:42 AM Now we also get exceedingly tedious bodhran solos from some of our own trad musicians. It can all be traced back to those days. :-( |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: GUEST,Richard Robinson Date: 08 Oct 19 - 09:13 AM There was some good stuff on Disraeli Gears; "We'e going wrong" is still worth the occasional listen (IMO). When drums stop ... exit stage left, pursued by a bassist. I know this joke is in the wrong order, but I'm told you don't get any points on your artistic license for it. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 08 Oct 19 - 11:50 AM Yes it was Airforce not Army Sorry. Yes the drum Battle happened. I was about ten yards away from both kits! I was deaf for two days. Then again I saw Quo in the Marquee Club (deaf for a week!) |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ginger Baker, Cream Drummer (1939-2019) From: Dave Sutherland Date: 09 Oct 19 - 05:28 PM I first saw Ginger Baker with the Graham Bond Organisation in early 1965 when they were on a concert tour supporting Chuck Berry who I had actually gone to see. I would be hard pressed to recall anything that Mr Berry did on that night but the set provided by GBO (all 4 now no longer with us) remains as clear as yesterday; including Ginger's drum solo. My introduction to the Blues. |
