NOTES Lyrics from listening to the song many times, searching for matching lines in similar songs, and discussing lyrics with multiple other listeners. Two voices apparent: Rev. and Wife. Rev. sings chorus and verse. Wife performs backing vocals for most of verse and chorus lines. Only her separate chorus lyrics are shown in brackets. Her keening vocals are an essential element of this song. Confidence in lyrics: High, except some words in the following lines in which I have moderate confidence: Words, don't say the words he fears Oh Satan where that hypocritics you If you don't mind he'll cripple on you He's always in some Christian tent Comparable lyrics: From; Negro Spirituals by Thomas Wentworth Higginson XXV. BLOW YOUR TRUMPET, GABRIEL "O, Satan is a liar, and he conjure too, And if you don't mind, he'll conjure you." XXII. LORD REMEMBER ME! "For Death is a simple ting, And he go from door to door, And he knock down some, and he cripple up some" Performer: Rev. I.B. Ware with Wife and Son Earliest known version from recording done 12/12/1928. Song found on youtube. Eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yge5VDq5nJc One original recording found now on many albums. Metadata of recording available at https://musicbrainz.org/recording/e0c52a0c-5e50-4016-888e-465c1bc69af5 Confusion: This song has been confused with Gid Tanner's song "You've Got to Stop Drinking Shine" on many review and lyrics websites and the name of this song has been used by multiple groups for performances of Gid Tanner's song. (Eg Sacred Shakers). The lyrics of these songs are very different. Transcription by E.W. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yge5VDq5nJc |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: leeneia Date: 02 Jan 20 - 10:39 AM Thanks, Grimey. That's interesting. Good advice, too. Now more than ever. Don't drink moonshine liquor. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 02 Jan 20 - 03:22 PM In my limited experience I would say there is nothing wrong with good moonshine, the good stuff compares well with the the more expensive bottled in bond. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Jan 20 - 10:07 PM There are now various various varieties of moonshine and poteen available at liquor stores in the US. I've tried both, and I think they don't compare well with the illegal stuff. -Joe- https://www.finewinehouse.com/bunratty-irish-potcheen-750ml.html $30.98 at the Fine Wine House, and available at other outlets for as much as $75.98. And it's not as good as what our Irish priest supplied to select parishioners. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine as From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 04 Jan 20 - 06:38 PM I have drunk ,"moonshine" and distilled it up to 188 proof. It is not nice stuff. IT will eat your guts out… and elucidate a Rebel Yell. Sincerely, GARGOYLE |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 05 Jan 20 - 06:06 PM If that is your experience I would suggest that you both change your suppliers. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: cnd Date: 05 Jan 20 - 11:37 PM Minor corrections as best as I can hear to the lyrics: The chorus goes, "Lord don't like it, I know" The lines you had trouble with goes "Oh Satan wears that hypocrite shoe" You better quit drinking shine If you don't mind he'll shove 'em on you You better quit drinking shine I agree with everything else in the transcription |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: GUEST,grimey Date: 07 Jan 20 - 11:59 AM cnd - that is good work about the hypocrite shoe. "Oh Satan wears that hypocrite shoe" After that, I think the Rev. sings, "If you don't mind he'll cripple on you", but the Wife starts to sing, "............ mind he'll shove 'em on you", (or "slip 'em on you"). cf THE CARTER FAMILY "Title: There's No Hiding Place Down Here" Oh, the Devil wears a hypocrite's shoe The Devil wears a hypocrite's shoe The Devil wears a hypocrite's shoe And if you don't watch out he'll slip it on you There's no hiding place down here Gid Tanner - You've Got To Stop Drinking Shine has repeated line, "God don't like it I know, God don't like it I know, scandal and a shame." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJBE4zW1d5A Rev I.B. Ware - You Better Quit Drinking Shine my ears still hear the repeating line, "Lord don't like shine, no (No, Lord)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yge5VDq5nJc Can other people please have a listen and share here what they hear as the chorus line and as the lines after "Oh Satan wears that hypocrite shoe" (around 1:38). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: GUEST,grimey Date: 07 Jan 20 - 12:16 PM To be clear, do you hear Rev. I.B. Ware singing in the chorus: A. "Lord don't like it, I know" B. "Lord don't like shine, no" C. something else ? AND From 1:38 "Oh Satan wears that hypocrite shoe, You better quit drinking shine." What do you hear as the next line? (The two singers may be singing different words.) |
Subject: Lyr Add: YOU BETTER QUIT DRINKING SHINE (I B Ware) From: GUEST,Bayard Date: 02 Mar 20 - 07:02 AM Hi, Here is my take on the lyrics (only slight differences from those already in this thread), included in my review of this marvellous record on rateyourmusic, which I have replicated below. I think the male voice sings "I know" (rather than "no") at the end of the thrice repeated line, and the female voice is singing "know" (rather than "no") , echoing the last line of the male singer's line, as she does with the lines ending "shine". My review:- Both these sides were cut in early November 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama, by the Rev. I.B. Ware, the Reverend accompanying himself on guitar with his wife joining him on vocals, and son apparently playing tambourine, but if present the tambourine is buried deep in the mix. With a name which is pronounced "I Beware" it is extremely likely thst the artist name is a pseudonym, but if so the true identity of the artist (and the wonderful female singer, who may or may not have been his wife) is lost in the mists of time, most unfortunately. "I Wouldn't Mind Dying (But I Gotta Go By Myself)" is an African-American gospel song which is known under a variety of titles, most often "Bye and Bye We're Going to See the King". This recording is a very fine, deeply spiritual vocal duet, straight from the church:- Lord, I wouldn't mind dyin' but I gotta go by myself [three times] I wouldn't mind dyin' if that was all Well after death there will be judgment come [three times] I wouldn't mind dyin' if that was all Bye and bye, we'll all see the King [three times] I wouldn't mind dyin' if that was all "You Better Quit Drinking Shine" is even better, with hypnotic, insistent guitar and vocals in a similar vein, the extended female vocal on the words "know" and "shine" at the end of each line being particularly effective, as they preach against the Satan inspired evil of moonshine:- Lord don't like it, I know (know, Lord) [three times] You'd better quit drinking shine Words don't say them words he fears You'd better quit drinkin' shine I tell lies to my master's rear You'd better quit drinkin' shine Lord don't like it, I know (know, Lord) [three times] You'd better quit drinking shine Ol' Satan is a liar and a conjurer too You'd better quit drinkin' shine If you don't mind he'll conjure you You'd better quit drinking shine Lord don't like it, I know (know, Lord) [three times] You'd better quit drinking shine Oh, Satan wears that hypocrite shoe You'd better quit drinking shine If you don't mind he'll trample on you You'd better quit drinking shine Lord don't like it, I know (know, Lord) [three times] You'd better quit drinking shine Ol' Satan lie like a snake in the grass You'd better quit drinking shine He's always in some Christian tent You'd better quit drinking shine Lord don't like it, I know (know, Lord) [three times] You'd better quit drinking shine Oh, one of these mornings bright and fair You'd better quit drinking shine Gonna hitch on my wings, gonna try the air You'd better quit drinking shine Lord don't like it, I know (know, Lord) [three times] You'd better quit drinking shine These are two exceptional gospel blues sides. |
Subject: Lyr Add: YOU'VE GOT TO STOP DRINKING SHINE (Tanner From: Jim Dixon Date: 18 Mar 20 - 01:03 PM You can hear this recording at YouTube: YOU'VE GOT TO STOP DRINKING SHINE As recorded by Gid Tanner, Columbia 15716-D, 1930. (Solo voice and banjo.) SPOKEN: All right, boys; this here's "Cut Out That Shine." That's what you ought to do. 1. The state has cut this whiskey out, But they let you have a little wine. Most ev'rybody gettin' on a drunk And they must be drinkin' that shine. CHORUS: God don't like it, I know. (3x) [It's a] scandal and a shame. God don't like it, I know. (3x) [It's a] scandal and a shame. 2. Some men won't pay their honest debt, Let their bills get far behin', Draw their money ev'ry week And drink it all up in shine. CHORUS 3. This old world's gwine to be lost [If it] keep on like it's goin'. God's folk cannot have a church With people drinkin' that shine. CHORUS 4. They say the yellow corn Makes the very best kind. Better go to makin it up in bread And stop that makin' that shine. CHORUS 5. If you are a soldier of the cross, Make it up in your mind: Serve the Lord with all o' your might And stop that drinkin' that shine. CHORUS [Copies of these lyrics can be found at several places on the internet, but they are misattributed to Rev. I. B. Ware.] |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: leeneia Date: 19 Mar 20 - 12:08 AM I read science books a lot. I recently read in one that inexperienced moonshiners can produce methyl alcohol by mistake. Methyl alcohol will blind you. Don't drink moonshine. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 19 Mar 20 - 01:09 AM Greg, (Gargoyle) good to hear from you here. You know of course that NASCAR racing came about when moonshiners tried out running the revenooers and assorted other authorities. Well, I think NASCAR needs to get back to its roots. Each car should have to carry 5 or 6 cases of 'shine in the trunk. It would make rear-enders much more spectacular..... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Better Quit Drinking Shine From: GUEST,cnd Date: 19 Mar 20 - 01:30 AM In response to Bayard's comment that Rev. I B. Ware was likely a stage name, I agree, BUT there are documents citing a reverend under that name in the American Midwest around the early 1900s. Also possibly a created name. While it's unclear if they were the same person, it would be interesting if they weren't. |
