Subject: RE: Chord Req: songsheet for VALLEY GIRL(Frank Zappa) From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Feb 20 - 10:01 PM I'm not sure if it's proper to refer to the singer as Moon Zappa, or Moon Unit Zappa. She was 14 years old at the time. The 1982 song has a Wikipedia page. I don't known that Moon actually sings anything on the recording - she just says things that girls from the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles would say at the time...and they were things that were definitely worthy of ridicule, but often could be interesting and even poetic. The center of "Valley Girl" talk was California State University at Northridge. I kinda freaked out when I met some girls from South Central who were going to Northridge and talking Valley Girl. Seemed like the South Central girls would have better off being proud of where they came from, since "Valley Girl" talk was often associated with the term "airhead." Whatever the case, it was an interesting phenomenon that a certain way of talking would develop in such a specific area as the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, and only among girls. My own daughter picked up aspects of that way of talking in Sacramento. Not my sons, though. Here's the song:Er, gag me with a spoon....barf me out. |

Subject: ADDPOP: Don't Eat the Yellow Snow From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Feb 20 - 03:32 PM Someone expressed dismay at my posting the lyrics of "Valley Girl." Since I worked in LA in the Age of the Valley Girl, I always kinda liked that song. And here's another Zappa favorite. I think his humor is terrific, right up there with Weird Al and Spike Jones. Thread #77849 Message #1393962 Posted By: Joe Offer 31-Jan-05 - 01:59 AM Thread Name: Song challenge: If caught in a snow drift... Subject: ADDPOP: Don't Eat the Yellow Snow Well, I suppose it doesn't meet the song challenge, but this song has never, ever been posted at Mudcat, as far as I can determine. It makes me wonder, though, if the St. Bernard dogs would drink the brandy in the keg and then pee it on the avalanche victims... Don't go there, Joe. -Joe Offer- DON'T EAT THE YELLOW SNOW (Frank Zappa, of blessed memory) Dreamed I was an eskimo Frozen wind began to blow Under my boots and around my toes The frost that bit the ground below It was a hundred degrees below zero... And my mama cried And my mama cried Nanook, a-no-no Nanook, a-no-no Don't be a naughty eskimo Save your money, don't go to the show Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh Well I turned around and I said ho, ho And the northern lights commenced to glow And she said, with a tear in her eye Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: songsheet for VALLEY GIRL(Frank Zappa) From: Nick Date: 19 Feb 20 - 04:14 PM I still have my (mono) copy of We’re Only In It For the Money which has some great lyrics on it. And it’s signed by Jimmy Carl Black after he played a gig locally with a blues guitarist (Mick Pini). I took it along specially. And another highlight from Zappa are the harmonies on Happy Together on the live Fillmore album. And he’s not a bad guitarist sometimes |
