Well someone had to do it...

Good place to kick off: I note that the EU, quite rightly in m'humble, is not thinking of doing a deal with us at all unless we refuse US chlorinated chicken. So I guess we'd better stick with the EU after all... Nothing like taking back control, is there?

Fortunately, they said more than that.

For quite a while now I have had the suspicion that the Government was prepared to ban chlorinated chicken and would do so with much flag waving, while letting other food below the EU standards in. There was a good hint of this a day or two ago where the government spokesman was saying that the chlorine wash is old technology and most US poultry farms are switching to a lactic acid wash. If that is true, banning chlorine washes would be largely symbolic, but if everyone's attention has been focussed on it, they could miss that it is actually not especially significant.

But the EU proposal would apply just as much to lactic acid washes.

That is why US chicken typically have 2% prevalence of salmonella and the EU chickens 15%.

It is simply protectionism.

Is that a typo in the subject line? Should it be (for remaniacs only)?

As I have said before, I did vote remain myself. Further to the previous thread, I have also spoken to people in the pub who voted leave. It is quite possible to do you know.

I've cooked many a hundred chickens and we've never contracted food poisoning. It's about knowing how to handle ANY raw meat, though admittedly a high rate of Salmonella or other nasties is unacceptable and is a reflection of bad practice in the places where chickens are reared. The US assumes (and appears to accept) a high rate of Salmonella contamination, etc., and chlorine-washes appropriately, as it sees it. To me, that's even less acceptable. It's not so much the chlorine; it's the acceptance of low standards behind it that requires the chlorine wash in the first place. If it was the chlorine itself to worry about, no-one would drink tap water or go to the baths.

The US assumes (and appears to accept) a high rate of Salmonella contamination, etc., and chlorine-washes appropriately, as it sees it.

But apparently not as high as the EU is prepared to accept.

From the Grocer quoting the Adam Smith Institue
immersing poultry meat in chlorine dioxide solution of the strength used in the United States reduces prevalence of salmonella from 14% in controls to 2%. EU chicken samples typically have 15-20% salmonella.”
cf Date: 25 Feb 20 - 06:01 AM

If 2% is high what is 15-20%?

I'd be even more concerned about the relative levels of growth hormones
and other feed/injection chemicals in meat...???

We can't afford top quality free range, and have no intention of going vegetarian,
so our income bracket will suffer most from dodgy imported supermarket meats...

Just watched an interesting documentary on BBC Wales
which revealed some of what goes into abnormally fast grown supersized USA cattle...!!!

Like I keep saying. Science has an answer, and we won't like it. See above.

Climate Change, Brexshit, 10 years of austerity** and now the inevitable wobbly (there always is one) that no-one predicted - "COVID-19" - are bound to put pressure on the food chain, and unless we are prepared to pay 20% of an average annual income on food (as we did 40 years ago) then the 9% we save comes at a largely hidden cost that is not counted in pennies. see above. And more people grew their own then! And what little bit of waste was all composted then.

AND FFS, we can't even bury our heads in sand, unless it is quicksand under the nouveau-lakes, this winter!

**the Metro reported a badly worded stat about 10 years of austerity causing the advance in life expectancy to stall.

There aren't growth hormones in the chicken produced here that is sold to the public. I don't know about birds identified for pet food, etc.

And what is it with you guys and "chlorinated chicken?" The water has some chlorine in it and it evaporates after some time in the air. If chicken is rinsed with US water chances are there is some chlorine in it, but this isn't poultry dipped in pool chemicals. https://www.chickencheck.in/faq/chlorine-washed-chicken/.

Thread creep / hijack..???

yeah.. why not..

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2019/oct/16/meat-the-family-new-reality-tv-show-challenges-carnivores-to-eat-their-pets

"It is one of the most shocking ultimatums delivered on television. Go vegetarian or we kill your pet.

But a new British reality TV show called Meat the Family goes even further.
Not only will a family of unrepentant carnivores have to let an animal they have adopted and grown to love go for slaughter
if they refuse to stop eating meat – they will be asked to cook and eat it.

With experts saying that we have to eat less meat to stave off climate change,
the Channel 4 show challenges four heavy meat-eating families to take home and look after
the “animal which ends up most often on their plates”.
"

Our position as 'ethical carnivores' [catchy.. innit..] didn't change
after watching all 3 episodes...

Carefully omitting to add that the same is true in other european countries.
Of course rising lebvels of obesity, junk food consumption and increasing incidence of diabetes have zero influence on life expectancy.

As I said, Maggie, it ain't the actual chlorine that matters. It's the fact that chlorine seems be be used to excuse farmers from applying good hygiene standards. And we know that good hygiene standards are part and parcel of good welfare standards. The perception here is that the US is less concerned about these things than we are and that the chlorine just provides a panacea.

Good piece in today's Guardian about farming practices and rewilding. It's the Long Read.

junk food consumption and increasing incidence of diabetes have zero influence on life expectancy - you mist (sic) the question mark, slow down, you will make more sense.

And the easy (aka cheap) method of getting maximum calories when you don't have much money (aka austerity) is to go for the densest fodder. "Greasy animal protein". Hardly saying a different story. Cause and effect are easy to spot.

It is a correlation that can be explained, unscientifically, at least:
In a recession the sale of sweets and coffee go up out of proportion to times aplenty. Cheap fast food would be included in this context.
People go out shopping and find the product they sought is a bit too expensive (aka "can't find anything") so they say "let's go for a coffee". Sweets to shut the child up etc.
The rise and rise of coffee shops everywhere would seem to testify to the phenomenon.

I well remember an American political pundit warning on Reaganomics (as in Thatcherism) in 1985 - he predicted pot holes on our roads.
Given the life of tarmac - that particular chlorinated chicken is certainly coming home to roost. On our bloody motorways!

Is our tory govt weighing up cost effectiveness of numbers of old folk with dementia needing social care,
versus numbers of old folk projected to snuff it during a 'controlled' pandemic outbreak...

The only significant consideration in such an equation
for our govt might be how many of the potential elderly victims
are tories...

You guys should have the same strategy for disease control as the US which is to fire everyone in the chain of command in pandemic response and replace with a FOX news reporter. This way control is under the control of one single person, Donald Trump.

This is like a cliff hanger reality show. I'm on the edge of my chair. This will really help ratings.

Cummings spent his formative years in Durham,a place noted for a largely incomprehensible accent rather that a hot bed of Russian intrigue.
He actually worked in Russia from1994-7.

If you want reds in the bed you would be better served studying the antics of certain of corbyn's clowns. Did the master himself not go on a bicycle made for two with dazy abbot for an assignation in E. Germany with the Stasi?

The EU has a stance on life expectancy

https://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/social-issues-migration-health/trends-in-life-expectancy-in-eu-and-other-oecd-countries_223159ab-e
A better piece of research than Marmot, who should be lumped together with montbiot and marmite.
It would be interesting to see if the decrease on a country by country basis correlates with the size of the sub saharan immigrant communities, where life expectancy at birth is at least 10 years less.
To counter this holocaust survivors had an increased life expectancy.
Could it be argued that survivors and migrants are better survivalists due to genetics and outlook, or simply happenstance?
It is obviously a far more complex subject and requires a far more intricate analysis than marmot's cheap political shots.

Even the BBC seem to be saying that this is fake:

Hmmmmm

If you were in charge of the country's secrets would you tell a minister who fires everyone who disagrees with you? Come on, MI5 are not about opinions, and prejudice - their job is to get the facts. Ya canna let the incredulous loose with facts. Geeze. Ya spoon-feed them. With facts ya want let loose. Agents' lives are at stake.

I generally try to provide working links to substantiate what I have stated. (Unlike some of the more opinionated that post)
Out of curiosity I did a little digging into life expectancies and some studies indicate that immigrants have a greater life expectation than the indigenous population. Other studies contradict this. Obviously a fertile field for definitive research.

When you consider that Smirki Patel was forced to step down after fixing clandestine and unauthorised meetings with Israeli ministers when she was purportedly on holiday, it would hardly be surprising if intelligence agencies felt that they couldn't trust her.

All about a civil servant that thinks he knows better than his boss.   A gem from Guido.

The big blouse has flounced off - He thinks he is in "are you being served" instead of "yes Minister"

Hilarious to see the gruniard thinks the minister should resign. The laddie has a cv replete with failure upon failure.
Hopefully Monday morning we will see him emptying his desk, escorted by security, and thrown out the door. All filmed by the BBC overhead chopper for our delectation and delight. A luvverly bit of swampdraining.

The 2019 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 12 December. On that day the leftwaffe lost its wings and now can only resort to making silly aeroplane noises. Their voices and opinions no longer mean anything and are safely ignored by the victorious brexiteers. With a corbyn in skirts as the likely leader of magic grandad's continuity circus there is no fear of them having any kind of influence for the forseable future. I look forward to Dominic's full frontal assault on the civil service to make them compliant to the Minister's will.

The civil service conspired to topple a few other ministers.Like the lefty nemesis the mighty Maggie (Blessedbe her name), this lady is not for turning.
Governments govern, civil servants do as they are told. This seems to be a novel experience for those in the public sector. I must introduce them to Dominic Cumming. He will sort them out.
I must say the lefty screeching on this subject is music to my ears.
The only power they have is within their lungs and a little white noise soon deadens that.
Rudderless, leaderless, clueless and inept - the guiding principles of modern labour.(Guaranteed to keep them out of power for ever.) The only fools that think twitter is more imortant than the ballot box and winning the argument more valuable than winning the election.
You would need a heart of stone not to laugh at the self inflicted predicament they are in. They continue to chatter away on here convinced people are listening to them. I could almost feel sorry for them but then I think of the 3.5 years constant betrayal of democracy and brexit and no........ I do not have even the slightest tinge of sympathy for them.

a uk senior civil servant has resigned because of Patels bullying
Perhaps that should read "because of reports of Patel's bullying" as it appears that Rutnam has not witnessed it himself but is relying on the claims of others, according to his resignation speech recorded by The Independent
“I have received allegations that her conduct has included shouting and swearing, belittling people, making unreasonable and repeated demands – behaviour that created fear and that needed some bravery to call out.
“I know that resigning in this way will have serious implications for me personally – the Cabinet Office offered me a financial settlement that would have avoided this outcome.
“I am aware that there will continue to be briefing against me now I have made this decision, but I am hopeful that at least it may not now be directed towards my colleagues or the department.
“This has been a very difficult decision but I hope that my stand may help in maintaining the quality of government in our country – which includes hundreds of thousands of civil servants, loyally dedicated to delivering this government’s agenda.
“I will make no further comment at this stage.”

If, as he says, "The Cabinet Office offered me a financial settlement" then it looks as if he was on his way out anyway, and has jumped before he could be pushed. As such I doubt he will be successful in claiming 'constructive dismissal'.

For reference, this is what the UK includes in its 184 page document of trade objectives:

Public Negotiating Objectives for a Free Trade Agreement with the United States
Overall objectives
• Agree an ambitious and comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States (US) that strengthens the economic relationship with our largest bilateral trading partner, promoting increased trade in goods and services and greater cross-border investment.
• Increase UK GDP by opening up opportunities for UK businesses, including Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and investors, and facilitating greater choice and lower prices for UK producers and consumers.
• The Government has been clear that when we are negotiating trade agreements, the National Health Service (NHS) will not be on the table. The price the NHS pays for drugs will not be on the table. The services the NHS provides will not be on the table. The NHS is not, and never will be, for sale to the private sector, whether overseas or domestic.
• Throughout the agreement, ensure high standards and protections for UK consumers and workers and build on our existing international obligations. This will include not compromising on our high environmental protection, animal welfare and food standards.

=====

Obviously, there is much more. But in particular, notice that it says it will not compromise of the prices the NHS pays for drugs, nor on animal welfare and food standards.

I hope everyone posting on this site will hold them to that, and not seek excuses if they do not.

You and I may think that, pfr, but this it THE deal that a lot of Brexiteers have been concentrating on. So I would quite like them to say "Yes, these are the objectives we want, and we will do what we can to ensure the government keeps to them."

I don't really expect them to, of course.

Just to keep you happy:
"Yes, these are the objectives we want, and we will do what we can to ensure the government keeps to them."
However, the government are currently in negotiation. I realise that the ardent remainers have never quite understood this. While we have objectives, the other party to the negotiation (Be it USA or EU) will also have objectives, and it is likely that the two will not match.
That is the point of 'negotiation'. At least when the negotiation is with the EU they now know that, if all else fails (which I hope it doesn't) the country can continue to trade on WTO terms.
The previous incumbent of No 10 did not appear to understand this, and I very much doubt that any leader the Labour Party could put forward would do any better.
So we have Boris. Whatever you may think of him, I believe that he has the best interests of this country in view when he negotiates on our behalf. His marital or parental status has nothing to do with his ability to do the job.

Surely honourable patriotic civil servants have a duty to question & resist
any government's intentions to impose the beginnings of a totalitarian regime
on our nation...???
That's out job, in five year's time.

They are expected to do as they are asked, after pointing-out the legality/practicality/consequences thereof. But it behooves the ministers to be considerate. Priti Patel was described by her colleagues, in her defence fer gawd's sake, as robust. Code words for something much more than assertive. She is an ex-lobbyist for tobacco & alcohol. Er... pushy sans morals also fits.

Philip Rutnam has been critical in defence of his staff. Part of his job, I submit.

Roll on the employment tribunal, and his memoirs.

Don't the bastards in power realise they are farting about with something that could be done at any time, the fucking climate is fucking us NOW. History will judge, and they are judging us now - those school kids!

A dismissal, employment court case, figure of £25,000 in judgement, and an attempted suicide and Priti Patel slated as the direct cause.

Unless you can give a link to this it appears the BBC think otherwise:

A settlement was reached in 2017 for £25,000 after the member of staff threatened to bring a legal claim of bullying, harassment and discrimination on the grounds of race and disability against the department, including Ms Patel who is directly named.

A settlement following a threat of legal action is not "a judgement in an employment court case"

Nigel, I would normally do this, but you seem to have missed the comma between 'employment court case' and 'figure of judgement'

You are not the only one who can nickpick. Most of us understand the basic without resorting to such minor considerations. We are not a court of law :-)

No, I didn't miss the meaning of a comma. There is none in the phrase: figure of £25,000 in judgement. In order for the £25,000 to be 'in judgement' it cannot be just a figure decided 'out of court'.

"We are not a court of law". No, but that doesn't mean we can bend the news to suit our own requirements.

Not "converse"
There's never been any doubt that Johnson is a racist and a misogynist with a track record of non-delivery - that's what the Tories voted for, that's what they wanted, that's what they got - which confirms the Tory Party to be racist and misogynist by instinct and don't care very much whether their government delivers on its promises
We now know that their Home Secretary is a serial bully with the threat of a law suit hanging over her - an added card to the Tory pack
In addition, is is prepared to resort to a non-elected thug capable of frog-marching those he doesn't approve of out of Downing Street
Just the party to take Britain out of Europe into Trump's Brave New World led by a "racist and a misogynist"

Iains you and your scriptwriters are talking bollox on two cheap points..

Because your sort are constantly of that ingrained mindset.
This time you think you are clever trying to falsely blame your opponents
for your own pernicious prejudices.
WE know you only tolerate Patel because she is a useful token
of newly claimed tory inculusivity..

"Yes of course we tories are modern and no longer racist,
LOOK we have some Asians now..
and better still, this one is even a woman...!!!
"..

2] funny how the right are now getting so upset and outraged about a city centre lawn
[which will grow back, or even be replaced by Greta supporters cash pledges..]
Suddenly one lawn is more important than all the rain forests you never care about being destroyed
for 'progress' and profit...

"Hardly a smear. Yet again you clearly demonstrate you have zero knowledge of the allegations and attempt to denigrate and trivialise serious charges."

Antisemitsm has always been the domain of the right
When I came into this world, the right, financed by German Industrial capitalism, were herding the Jewish people, along with the left, Gypises, Trade Unionists, and those considered physically and mentally "unsuitable to be part of their new order" into death camps in their tens of millions, to be first used as slaves, and then exterminated - a 'right wing policy'
Now, at the other end of my life, the Jews are again being used, this time by those claiming to represent them, as human shields against criticism of a right-wing policy of ethnically cleansing the Arab People, supported by right-wing politicians throughout the world who are happy to use the same Jewish people to fulfill their own political ambitions
This has been done by making it impossible to distinguish between real antisemitism and criticism of Israel - the result being a sharp rise in real antisemitism
Again, The Jewish People have become victims of extreme right-wingism - at both ends of my life

If antisemitism is a serious problem, then so is Islamophobia
Those accused of the former immediately took steps to deal with it
It is nearly five years since Muslim leaders complained of a serious problem of Islamophobia in the Tory Party
The response of that Party has been to appoint a nown racist as Prime Minister who is now happily climbing into the pocket of a wold leader who is racist, misogynist, antisemitic, and who is strongly supported by the longest running Antitisemitic organisation on this planet - The Ku Klux Klan

The Right has had to re-define the term and call it "NEW ANTISEMITISM"
No attacks on the Jewish People, no Antismistism

Boris Johnson
Boris Johnson’s record of bigotry, antisemitism and far-right politics must not be forgotten
A group of Jewish academics and campaigners voice their concerns about the prejudices of the Conservative leader, while residents of Jeremy Corbyn’s constituency express their full confidence in their representative
Letters

Wed 11 Dec 2019 1
Boris Johnson has invoked some of the oldest and most pernicious antisemitic stereotypes in a book he wrote when he was a Conservative shadow minister. He describes “Jewish oligarchs” who run the media, and fiddle the figures to fix elections in their favour.
He portrays a Jewish character, Sammy Katz, with a “proud nose and curly hair”, and paints him as a malevolent, stingy, snake-like Jewish businessman who exploits immigrant workers for profit. There is nothing subtle about this. We know what antisemitism looks like.
Johnson has form when it comes to anti-Jewish hatred. As editor of the Spectator he chose to publish articles in which the notorious racist Taki Theodoracopulos boasted of being “an antisemite”, argued black people “have lower IQs than whites” and praised Enoch Powell as a “great man”. Johnson defended Theodoracopulos, calling him a “distinguished columnist”. Even now Johnson continues to cosy up to Donald Trump, despite his rhetoric about Jewish disloyalty and support for neo-Nazis.
Johnson’s contempt for minorities, women, LGBT+ and working-class people is well known, so it’s not surprising this extends to Jews. We share the pain that many feel about antisemitism on the left and we will continue to hold the Labour party to account. But we wholly reject Boris Johnson’s cynical attempts to exploit our community’s legitimate concerns to distract from his own disgraceful bigotry.
A vote for the Conservatives is a vote for a far-right government that poses an existential threat to all minorities. As Jews, we understand that our fate is bound up with that of other minorities. We will only find safety through solidarity. We call on allies of the Jewish community to reject hate and vote the Tories out.

If you are winning the argument why so insistant on closing the thread?
Are you afraid to face up to the fact that the majority of the electorate finds your policies shite?
