Just read that Julie passed away in her sleep on the evening of Sunday, 22nd March, following a short illness.

I had the privilege of meeting Julie several times, and playing on the same bill a couple of occasions. Julie was a lovely lady, and a fine singer, musician, and entertainer. She will be sadly missed, and the world is a poorer place without her.

RIP Julie, lovely lady spoke to her at one of the south London folk clubs many years ago and I think it was the Ludlow Festival in 1999.

Sad news: a part of my folk music growing up. One of the first LPs I bought was hers, and also remember her series on BBC TV.

I met Julie when she played in Halifax a few years ago, I had always liked her singing and choice of songs, I fell in love when I met her, beautiful person, great singer. RIP Julie.

Back in mid-sixties, I had a mate who was besotted with Julie. She was house-hold name in the UK back then, indeed, Julie would have been more well known to the British public, back then, than Joan Baez would have been to the American public.
   I saw her perform a number of times and I always loved her repertoire.

The American-born folk singer Julie Felix has died at the age of 81 after a short illness, according to her agent.
The musician, who moved to the UK from California in 1964, rose to fame as the resident singer on Sir David Frost’s show The Frost Report and also hosted her own programme on the BBC titled Once More With Felix.

The show featured Leonard Cohen, Spike Milligan, Dusty Springfield, The Kinks and The Bee Gees.
Her agent Fran Collier said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce that folk legend Julie Felix died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday evening March 22 after a short illness.

“We offer our condolences to Julie’s family, friends and legions of fans at this time.
“She was a legend who will never be forgotten.”

Felix, who lived in the Chorleywood area of Hertfordshire, is said to have become the first solo folk performer signed to a major British record label.
She was also one of the artists to perform at the first Isle Of Wight Festival and returned to perform there in subsequent years.

Felix, who sang protest songs, championed various causes throughout her life and visited the Middle East as a humanitarian ambassador for Christian Aid, campaigned on behalf of Latin American refugees and founded the Guitars Against Landmines fundraising campaign.
Felix was still performing at venues across the country up until her death.

Fond memories of MCing her at Portpatrick Festival in 2003. A bijou 3 day event where main stage was the 200-seater village hall and facilities were, well let's say fairly spartan. I shared a dressing room with her - in fact all of us, - Anthony John Clarke, North Sea Gas et al shared that dressing room too! A gracious woman and my abiding memory is of her having several mobile phones in that tiny room, all on charge!
She led us all in 'Wild Mountain Thyme' to end Saturday night's concert.
The following day her workshop included tales of life on the road, TV success and what it was like to be involved at the start of the 'boom.'
Good company, a delightful lady and a sad loss.

We were a trio, myself, Julie and Nigel Denver in 1961/2 in Germany, playing the American army bases in Garmisch PartenKirchen Kirchen.
I played the pipes. I gave Julie an introduction to Bruce Dunnet and she went to London and the rest is history. She was a lovely lass and a great lover of Woody Guthrie.
Sadly missed.

I was tasked to meet Julie at Liverpool St. Station in the early 60s & escort her to Chelmsford Folk Club in deepest Essex. On the first of several such excursions, Julie, who was carrying two guitars, tripped on the stairs, the poor lass measuring her length on the concourse...one guitar went north-west, the other, north-east. Apart from a grazed knee, she was unhurt & both guitars undamaged. It was only after she had 'dusted herself off' that I noticed her high heels. Julie was a unique talent, loved by our audiences. Her version of 'Masters of War' was gripping & spine-tingling. Sleep well, dear Julie.

But now can't recall anything about them..

Though, she must have sown folkie seeds in me,

Sad news indeed. I have added Julie to the "In Memoriam" thread. I've listed her as an English Folk Singer although she was born in the USA. My condolences to all those who know and love her.

Met ger a few times in the UK.... First meeting was in Tupholme Manor. Bardney in the early 1970s at the huge outdoor festival. Great singer and good company... R,I.P. Julie. xx

Just for the sake of accuracy/pedantry, I can't find any record that she appeared at the first IOW festival in 1968, but she was definitely there for the 1969 'Dylan' event. I can well remember the expression on her face when, after a very well received set,she asked for requests, and got a near-unanimous call for 'Going to the Zoo'.

She was a great ambassador for acoustic music over many years, and will be much missed.

I had no idea as to the depth of her work.

On Sunday 29th at 6pm on Celtic Music Radio I'll broadcast my tribute to Julie by playing two hours of her music.

I'm far from an expert. Like many, MANY, of my age, I first head her on Saturday mornings, taking us to the zoo, the zoo, the zoo. I then was aware of her as just another singer with a Saturday tea-time show on BBC. For a long time she meant no more to me than say, Cilla Black. And no harm to Cilla.

It was only when I started doing the Balladeers show and started seriously collecting the old vinyl that I was in any way aware of her contribution.

When she passed a few days ago, I was a little surprised to see all the comments about how she encouraged the emerging Folk "Second Wave" to quote Rab Noakes. And everything that I've read and heard since backs that up. So I'm going to try and dig as deep as I can- given that almost everything apart from three Decca LPs is out of print.

Sunday 29th March, 6pm to 8pm GMT on Celtic Music Radio and 95FM in Greater Glasgow.
