With Covid-19 no the rampage, all the Easter traditions will be looking pretty dismal and very quiet. John Prior of Llandaff, Cardiff has added three satirical verses to The Pace Egging Song, performed by Lancashire Pace Eggers.

John is a Llantrisant Folk Club member who used to work for the Arts Council of Wales; he devised the Night Out/ Noson Allan Scheme, which many entertainment venues, including folk clubs and folk musicians, find it possible to put on spectacular shows.

TRADITIONAL OPENING VERSES:

Here’s one, two, three jolly lads all in one mind
We are come a-pace-egging and we hope you’ll prove kind
And we hope you’ll prove kind with your eggs and strong beer
For we’ll come no more nigh you until the next year.

The first to come in is Lord Nelson you’ll see
With a bunch of blue ribbons tied round by his knee
And a star on his breast that like silver do shine
And I hope he remembers it’s pace egging time

JOHN PRIOR’S 2020 VERSES:

The next to come in is young Dominic Raab
He’s the Queen’s Foreign Secret’ry; yes, that’s his job
But before he got started he had to be taught
‘Cos he hadn’t learned yet that Dover’s a port.

The next to come in is Miss Priti Patel
She tells Civil Servants they can go to hell
She swears and she tells them “Get out of my face!”
From a Home Secretary that’s not very naice.

The next to come in is young Boris the Boss
For truth and convention he don’t give a toss
He says things are ‘fantastic’, but think what that means
The whole thing’s a fantasy built on his dreams.

TRADITIONAL CLOSING VERSES:

And the last to come in is old Toss Pot you’ll see
He’s a valiant old fellow in every degree
He’s a valiant old fellow, and he wears a pigtail
And all his delight is in drinking mulled ale

Come ladies and gentlemen sat by your fire
Put your hands in your pockets to feed our desire
Put your hand in your pockets, pull out sov’reigns bright
If you give none we’ll get none - Farewell and good night!
