Comedian Rich Hall takes a country music journey from Tennessee to Texas to look at the movements and artists that have shaped the genre over the years.
Funnier - and much shorter - than the Ken Burns series.

It's a repeat from 2017, which I didn't see when it was first shown, but I watched it last night and enjoyed it very much!

Great programme, much to enjoy, but the Austin segment had no mention of Blaze Foley, Townes Van Zandt or others in that coterie, except for a passing mention of Guy Clark.Lovely to see the old photos of a clean-cut, suit-wearing Willie Nelson, though!

Watching this again, I think it is one of the best documentaries about country music I’ve seen, possibly because it steers clear of the Nashville stereotype image and focuses more on its roots and early stars.

I enjoyed it for the most part, but I had some issues with Rich's presentation of the material. At the beginning, he says that all country singers are singing about fake lives they never lived but then dives deep into the beginning of country - he directly contradicts himself in the section about the Great Depression. I suppose he meant that comment in regards to modern country singers, but I felt like it was a bit disingenuous.

Also, while I couldn't here most of the bluegrass section thanks to very aggressive removal of the audio on the YouTube video I watched (since I don't live in the UK), I didn't like his description of Bill Monroe's playing as Monroe reacting to the electrification of other instruments. I don't think Monroe's intention with bluegrass was to remove electric instruments from the limelight, but moreso to bring his music to the limelight.

Being unfamiliar with Rich Hall, I at first found his personality a bit off putting, but he grew on me as it went. Besides those two remarks, I enjoyed the video a great deal.

No, I don’t think Monroe could have been that opposed to electric music, because he altered the pace of his Blue Moon of Kentucky to follow Presley’s version, rather than doggedly sticking to his original slower version.

Rich's presentation ................ he directly contradicts himself in the section about the Great Depression.

Rich's presentation generally is very much in the tradition of Lehrer and Bierce. Hyperbolic irony, hit the strap line. But Rich's tone is more earthy and forceful, in pretty much everything he presents. His comedy is over the top. That's the man, that's why he is popular.
