Seeing that the 2020 National Folk Festival was cancelled, and these isn't the usual Sunday Hymm Singing Session. I though I create one (a little bit later than usual but I'm on WA time.

Using the new Songbook, I'll lead off with page 18 "Drop Kick me, Jesus, Through the Goalposts of Life.

Bruce, I've always thought Bobby Bare's song there didn't get enough credit for the wit and potential depth of the song. For example, was it intentional that they used dropkicking -- an aspect of football which had been largely abandoned by the 1930s to insinuate that the singer had faith in Jesus to do something uncommon (and risky) despite its rarity? And I've always thought its commentary on determinism -- "I've got the will, Lord, if you've got the toe" was subtle but funny.

Anyways, I think the next song we can sing is a personal Easter favorite of mine: "When the Angels Rolled the Stone Away" as sung by Molly O'Day.

Bruce, some of us have already sung a hymn - from Hrothgar's official hymn book.

ex-Catter Canberra Chris called me this morning & we sang Jerusalem!
Well, he sang it, I'm very sniffley (hey, I have the famous Canberra cold, usually taken home from Canberra after singing too much in colder weather) & I haven't sung a note recently & Sydney is not cold (yet) He even had the traditional nip of whiskey (tho not Jamesons) & easter egg.

Then he called another ex-catter Chris Maltby & they each sang a hymn, ChrisM sang the Norfolk Island hymn (not in the book!) & he was planning to call JennieG, as I am.

I wonder where Hrothgr is ...

Jerusalem Hymn

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountain green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

I am a desperate man. I watched "Songs of Praise" on the ABC this morning, and it did not come close to the session. Too much travelogue and not enough singing, for a start.

Glad you all could make the session, I did watch a version of the "Hallehüjah Chorus" this morning and of course The Naval Hymm "Eternal Father, Strong to Save"

What next ?

Chris did ring but my dead phone was on charge, and we missed each other!

However a hymn came on radio "Christ the Lord is risen today" which I'm sure we have sung with gusto a few times, so that's my contribution.

There was a funny going around this morning on The Booke of Fayces: a very unkempt smiling Jesus rolling the stone away from his hidey hole in the rock and poking his head out, a police car driving past with a burly policeman hanging out the window, face mask in place, finger pointing at Jesus while saying "don't even think about it......"

"Jerusalem", was my late fathers favorite Hymm, its also was a hymm regularly sung by mass choirs of Royal Navy along with the Naval Hymm "Eternal Father, Strong to Save". He used sing it at a drop of a hat, him being both groomed as becomming High CE minister and as a RN Naval Officer with over twenty years of war & part time service.

Yes, I did try a ring around for maintaining the tradition of the Easter morning hymn sing at the National Folk Festival in some form. Sorry I couldn't connect, JennyG. And I couldn't find my contact for Hrothgar.

Did see a bit on the box, but nothing matched the best sing at the National.

I also caught a bit of the papal Mass in St Peters, eerily empty but great to see the whole floor! The service and singing did seem curiously joyless though, until I realised it was only Easter Saturday there.

Unexpected entertainment from the onscreen text - 'helloed be thy name', 'reason' for risen, and
'internal' for eternal life.

i attended an online mass this morning in polish from chicago. a woman sang the only music and she was awesome. reminded me so much of the stereotype i have of polish women.strong, beautiful, stoic. i could be wrong of course but I saw a nation's history in her standing there in her very flowered dress.
