I am glad that people can read the article that we are discussing but please bear in mind the precarious state of the magazine's finances and how much poorer we would all be be if it were not able to continue.

Fiona here - editor of The Living Tradition.
Vic brought this thread to my attention (thanks Vic). Glad you are enjoying his article about Peter.

Just to explain that we don't have an online version of the magazine (as yet), and we don't put all of our content online - though our website features lots of reviews, the occasional article, and lots of other information. We rely on subscriptions to keep the mag afloat, so that is why we urge people to buy the magazine if they are interested. So please do that if you can.

Having said that, since there is such interest in this one, and since I know that a lot of people don't have any spare cash at the minute, I have added it to our website (though it is text-only) at https://www.livingtradition.co.uk/magazine/articles. So feel free to read it from there, and if you like the type of content you find, and if you are able, maybe you might buy a hard copy too, just to support us a bit.

As some of you have said, this is a rough time for the magazine (as well as so many others who have had things cancelled and lost work for the foreseeable future). We plan to keep publishing to our usual schedule if we can, and already have made a good start on our next issue, which will be out in June. And we are really grateful for all the messages of support that we have received so far - it is humbling to know that the magazine means so much to you.

Peter stayed with us when he did a gig at the local folk club. Spent most of the time talking about his concern at getting "back" on the circuit after a prolonged absence . Laughed at his "Bottle Neck Concertina" tale from Doc Watson.

I can't quite manage a subscription (mailed to Canada) but I do try to
purchase individual issues.

I'll look at subscribing to Living Tradition - perhaps we could have a big push for that plus maybe a crowdfunding campaign? Having already lost fRoots, it's even more important to help keep them afloat.

A message from Fiona the editor expresses concern about how they are going to manage during this difficult time. This would have been the issue that had all the adverts for summer festivals which was a major source of income for them, so any advertising, donations, subscriptions and even single issue purchase would be very welcome.

I think his work the transports was very good and in my opinion, outstanding.
I rather dislkie Kipling and his imperialistic jingoistic propaganda, withe the exception of the jungle book, although Peter found some good tunes for the poetry.
Undoubtedly if he sawme write the above it would provke a furious outburst one rather charming aspect of Peter was that you could have a heated argument and still remain good friends

Simply enjoyed the PB article in LT ~ Peter was very knowledgeable man of many sides ~ Kipling and East Anglian trad singers among them ~ when he came to Barnsley he sat playing blues before he did his trad gig ~ saw him at Whitby ff a time or two and elsewhere ~ he died 1991 as did Keith Marsden his friend

I have been surprised by the large number of communications that I have had in response to this article; all favourable with most offering extra information that might have been useful; others which had information that was probably too sensitive to share. Anyway the title of the piece, Peter Bellamy and me, indicates that it was my personal account of this complicated man.

Resident at Bacca Pipes I believe but that was well before I was anywhere near Keighley. I first saw Peter at Whitby and was as enamoured by his flat cap, concertina and Rolling Stones T-shirt as I was with his music :-)

I remember meeting up with Peter at chippenham festival, him showing me his empty gig diary and saying to me that he did not think Ireland would be his salvation, this was the year i was moving to ireland, and a few moths before he committed suicide, he turned up at a spot i was doing and afterwards gave me a compliment [for him] you are not bad, we discussed one or two other performersand the changing folk scene
A dynamic performer an accomplished songwriter, a very good artist and sadly missed
