I read on facebook two days ago that Tommy Hickland, fiddle and keyboard player with Five Hand Reel passed away. Barry Lyons mentioned he had been battling cancer and the Covid-19 virus carried him off. I don't know any other details. I enjoyed the work of Five Hand Reel and had the privilege of seeing them once in concert. May he rest in peace.

His death has been extensively noted in his native Belfast with a range of tributes and reminiscences on the Message pages of belfastfolk.co.uk. His lifetime friend, Fergus Woods' Facebook page also has tributes and comment.

your mention of 5 hand reel led me to look up bobby eagleasham. he used to live next door to me in kendal 30 years ago - we argued about the merits of shane mcgowan and the pogues (i'm a fan) anyway, i just found out he died in 2004. he was a nice guy and a good neighbour

Oh what sad news - a truly tremendous band - I saw them in Dunelm House at Durham Folk Festival when I was a teenager and they were one of the bands who accelerated my interest in folk music. Loved their albums - especially the first one
