Hi

I'm trying to understand the lyrics to this song by Frank Dudgeon. English is not my mother tongue ... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTPvH0A301k

I Hate To Be Called A Hobo

Now I’m not too           that my head isn’t swell
I've been educated and I’m here to tell
I love conversation, I travel alone
So when I’m called hobo believe me I burn

I hate to be called a hobo
When they called me that I could explode
So don’t ever call me a hobo
I’m really a knight of the road

Now, don’t try to judge me by some bums you meet
Who pick-up a happy snipe                off the street
Now think that them kind              manners are own
I won’t pick a snipe less than two inch long

Smoking for me always          have appeal
I like a                 after each hardy meal
For the snipe that I’m smoking I’ve walked miles today
though          that guy never throw it away

I hate to be called a hobo
I like my pie a la mode
So don’t ever call me a hobo
I’m really a knight of the road

I’ve never gone bathing in milk or cologne
I made it a practice to leave them alone
But famous spring bathing I say is real fine
I bathed in the spring of 1899

I’ve walk till I’m weary from Frisco to Maine
Turn right around and walk back there again
My soles are so thin just from walking the rails
I can spend on a                  and tell heads or tails

I hate to be called a hobo
Not a penny I ever own
So don’t ever call me a hobo
I’m really a knight of the road

Martin, native English speakers would have trouble figuring words from the take you listed. The following is much cleaner and clearer all the way through.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCTSp-hwNzw

Please give that a listen, and if you need help after listening to it I'll do what I can.

Hi Starships

I should have thought about this... The Mopey Dick is almost the same, with minor variations.

I found, I think, what's missing in Frank Dudgeon version. But I still cannot find the first phrase. Seated?

Best

Martin

Now I’m not too seated        my head isn’t swell
I've been educated and I’m here to tell
I love conversation, I travel alone
So when I’m called a hobo believe me I burn

I hate to be called a hobo
When they called me that I could explode
So don’t ever call me a hobo
I’m really a knight of the road

Now, don’t try to judge me by some bums you meet
Who’ll pick-up a happy snipe butt off the street
I think that them kind of manners are wrong
I won’t pick a snipe less than two inch long
Smoking for me always did have appeal
I like a cheroot after each hardy meal
For the snipe that I’m smoking I’ve walked miles today
While I though that this guy never throw it away

I hate to be called a hobo
I like my pie a la mode
So don’t ever call me a hobo
I’m really a knight of the road

I’ve never gone bathing in milk or cologne
I made it a practice to leave them alone
But famous spring bathing I say is real fine
I bathed in the spring of 1899

I’ve walk till I’m weary from Frisco to Maine
Turn right around and walk back there again
My soles are so thin just from walking the rails
I can stand on a dime and tell heads or tails

I hate to be called a hobo
Not a penny I ever own
So don’t ever call me a hobo
I’m really a knight of the road

Hey, Martin. The missing word is conceited where at present it reads too seated.

Now I’m not conceited, my head isn’t swell

Your English is just fine, btw.

Hi Starship.

Ah! Conceited!

Prétentieux in french!

Many thanks! I tabbed the song and now I can sing it!

Best

Martin

That is great. I'd sure like to hear it when you get to that point. Best back to you.
