SOUTHERN SONGSTER
ENGLISH FOLK SONGS FROM THE HAMMOND AND GARDINER MANUSCRIPTS
Selected by Nick Dow
Musical notation by Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne
With notes by Steve Gardham
The Hammond and Gardiner manuscripts are amongst the most important nineteenth-century collections of English folk song.

PRE-ORDER – AVAILABLE IN JUNE
£15.00
https://francisboutle.co.uk/products/southern-songster/?fbclid=IwAR28KTHsFQdPjptlTqxBOzdd2_-wrSvM2xGwnza_nZUyYpLpHuCgMvSJBn8

It is over fifty years since Frank Purslow edited Marrow Bones, the influential book of folk songs collected by Robert and Henry Hammond and George Gardiner in Hampshire and Dorset between 1905 and 1908. Purslow went on to produce The Wanton Seed, The Constant Lovers and The Foggy Dew (the last two reprinted in 2017 as Southern Harvest) – 350 songs in all out of a total of 2,400. Southern Songster makes available a further 100 songs and ballads that have not seen the light of day for over a century. There are some unique tunes and texts, as well as interesting versions of songs already visited by Purslow.
The musical notation has been supplied by Cohen Braithwaite Kilcoyne, and the song notes have been supplied by Steve Gardham who has added considerably to our knowledge of these important nineteenth-century collections, while Tim Radford introduces ten chanties.
Above all this book is a collection of songs to to be sung and we hope that the new generation of singers who are raising the flag for traditional folk song will find our volume as important as the invaluable works of the late Frank Purslow.

Looking forward to it - it seems great value considering it's importance
One of these days someone will tackle the Grainger collection - and, dare one suggest, make a better job of the BBC project
These collections are essential to our understanding of our song heritage
Is there going to be a hardback edition - I can see this being very used ?
Thanks
Jim

Nick said something about the previous volume Southern Songster getting another run-off.

The only one that I know is still available is Marrow Bones. EFDSS have several copies for sale I'm told. Although we worked together on the notes, Malcolm's detailed stamp is marked all over it.

It is worth mentioning that if you do not read music, every single song has a Midi file available. Click on the file and it plays the tune. They are being submitted to the Full English Website under each song, or you can have them from me as a transfer when the book is purchased.
The book has been a long time coming but I think it will be worth it.

Good News Nick...How will they be indexed on the Full English site - ie. if a song is made of from more than one source...which source song will they be under..??

Tim Radford (and looking forward to see all...)

The best way would be to search by singer and Roud number, in advanced search, then scroll down the result to the Midi.
The gentleman who looks after the Midi files for the Full English lives in Australia. We submitted the files to him in the acceptable format about two months ago. I have no idea if they have been attached on the website as yet. I'll have a look when I can.

Tim, presumably the midi file will be attached to whoever's version we took the tune from. That seems reasonable. Although some texts, as in previous volumes, have been collations, the tunes are all single source.

Steve....(and Nick).....When I wrote I was not thinking as clearly as I should have...Yes, your answer is now obvious to me....and I also had a peek at the pre-print copy I have and looked at who provided the tunes for each song.....

Sorry Jim so you did. I think at the moment with things as they are we have to test the water, financially before we dive in. Then we have to see how the book is received. Your input as well as others will be valued. Then we can decide on the viability of a further run.
kind regards

None of the books in this series have ever been issued as hardbacks. Keeping costs down is essential with books of this sort. I might be wrong but what would be the advantage of a hardback anyway? When I get a book, and I have a couple of thousand, all I'm interested is what's inside it. Some of them are falling apart but that's actually the hardbacks anyway. Just curious! My original copies of the Purslow editions, apart from Foggy Dew which was badly bound, are all still in one piece after 50 years.

The Purslow became unusable very quickly
Beside the point really Steve - I'll welcome any improvement in the way of untampered-with texts and fuller notes and hope to use them and pass them on to whoever gets them (Limerick Uni., in our case) in a form I hope they can continue to be used
There are some I wouldn't bother with and others which are no loner replaceable - I was hoping this would,t be one of I could get in a solid form

Joe you appear to be getting off light. I purchased a book from your side of the pond last month, mailing to the UK added around 60%.

Excuse me - but I am taking a liberty by posting here one of the songs from the new book as recorded by me on my CD - "From Spithead Roads"
it is the song "The Fair Maid of Bristol" - Roud 17811 - that was only ever collected twice, both by Dr. Gardiner in The New Forest, Hampshire - My old home area, being born less than 4 miles from where the song was collected from Fred Osman in 1908.

I got notice today that my book had shipped. I can hardly wait.

I have a Kentish friend here in California who has been working on a book since I met him in about 1993. It's a collection of British political songs for the period 1750-1850. He's finally ready to publish it. I've been very impressed with Francis Boutle, so I suggested he might want to publish his book through Boutle in the UK. The University of Notre Dame Press did a nice job of publishing Dan Milner's recent book in the US, so I recommended that my friend try Notre Dame for US publishing.

Here is another song from the new book.......a very different arrangement to my original recording - "Come Roll The Cotton Down" - performed here with The Vox Hunters at the Mystic Sea Music Festival.
This version of the song was collected from James Bounds while he was in Portsmouth Workhouse in 1907 by Dr. Gardiner
