actually my freinds anmed their boat after this album! I had forgotten that... actually one of them was in a band with me for a while and we did a version of Dubhdarra (spelling?) off that same album. A beautiful song and I do miss singing it...

There's more than one song and one tune called "Granuaille" which is an incorrect but common spelling. See DT for a Gaelic song of this title, and there's an old thread on the subject. The oldest tune of that name is given as an ABC on my website. See Scarce Songs 1 file for 18th century songs to it.

I will look in my "Book of Invasions"later, or maybe Aine or one of the Gaelic speakers can help, I would rather fancy a Trimaran called "the Morrigan"( the tri-partite Goddess) we already have a 14 foot Giant of Her for processions. Our other Giant is Bran(the Blessed from the Mabinogion) but not, perhaps, a good name for a boat as you would be scared to use the "head"**BG**

Micca, what a coincidence! I just read that story again last night, it's so great. In the old Irish tale "The Sons of Turienn," Lugh Lamhfada, King of the Tuatha De Danann, had a ship called "Wave-Sweeper" which would fun to name a real boat. If only I knew what it was in Gaelic though...

Or if you want an alternative how about Fionnuala (pronounced finn-ula) one of the Children of Lir, who was turned into a swan by Aoife her evil stepmother, and might be appropriate for a boat.Her story is called the Children of Lir.

Cara, have you even listened to Shaun Davey's "Granuaile" (correct spelling)? It has the awesome Rita Connolly singing and Liam O'Flynn piping--a most excellent way to learn the story of Grace O'Malley, and it's music! What could be better?

No legion, she was the real thing! There is a great book about her - Grace O Mally, last fien of Connimara - one of the great women of Ireland. My favorite event in her life was, when returning from the court of Queen Elizabeth Tudor, she stops at the home of the Lord of Howth and demands hospitality, he turns down the barefoot Fien, dressed in Ermine - so she goes back to her ships, gets her retainers, they sack the castle and carry off his son. He gets as much gold as he can carry, goes off the Galway or Mayo, to find her (she had castles all over the place from Galway to Mayo) and finding her asks how much to get his son back. She tells him that he must set a place for a stranger at every meal in Howth castle, he agrees and gets his son back for nothing more than that. I am told that to this day, that place is reserved at Howth castle for anyone who comes to the door at meal time.

Hi there; I know some folks in Boston who have named their boat this same thing. Your spelling looks close enough to what they use. I have a book at home with a glossary of Celtic myth figures in it; I will look up the spelling if you wanna be more exact. Don't forget Grianne (pronounced GREE-un; slight roll of r sound); who was a solar goddess (not to be confused with Grainne, a version of the Arthurian Igraine). Honoring the sun while on a boat is not such a bad idea! peg

Subject: An Irish boat name--Help!!

A friend of mine (shamrock Yank and proud of it!) wants to name their new boat "something Irish". I suggested Grannuaile, (which I can't remember how to spell exactly--help please?) after the pirate queen. I can't exactly remember her legend, either--can someone tell me or point me in the right direction?

And also, even more fun, does anyone have another suggestion?
