Hi! I have a YouTube channel where I post transcriptions of folk songs, usually alongside a video. I was told this community would be interested!

Here is a link to my channel!

(I have no idea how to use this website so I'm probably doing something wrong!)

Best enter some monicker into the "From:" text field, such as "DrawingMusic957".

Your channel looks like a lot of work; my kudos for that!

Did you use sound-to-MIDI software, and if so, which one? Anyway, you must have done enough work by hand and ear. A few mistakes and arguable interpretations remain, almost inevitably.

Or have you been working with the players' original sheet music - from which then they took some liberty, which folk musicians are entitled to?

You must be aware of copyright issues; any arrangement of trad. material belongs to the arranger. Also, many tunes and lyrics have known authors, which should be mentioned even if their work is out of copyright.

Many of us find it profitable to study scores, even if we must not use them directly for our own performances.

Thanks for the kind words! I did everything by ear (no software), and I don't have any original sheet music to work from. I'm aware of the copyright issues, and it seems what I'm doing is okay so long as I don't try to profit off it in any way.

My main reason for transcribing these pieces was so that I could visualise what I was hearing, and study the scores in detail. I'm also aware that a few people enjoy what I'm doing because they like to play along, but I imagine the majority of folk musicians naturally prefer to play by ear!

You could even join the group if you'd like. Write to joe@mudcat.org and ask to become a member. That unlocks a few more features of the site.

It is Ok if works are genuinely trad. However, anything that isn't including words or music can be removed by copyright holders, irrespective of your intention to profit or not. Usually most will let things stand, as long as due credits are given.
