Email from Dick Holdstock, who's finishing writing a book and wants to acknowledge those who helped him:

I still need to acknowledge all the help I got at Vaughn Williams Library back in 1993 while I collected 400 songs there.Do you have any idea what the librarians name was then? There was a major person that filled in for him at that time named Peta Webb.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    dick

Can anybody help?

-Joe-

Thanks Tim

Those were wonderful times for me and Carol we stayed in Peckham in the home Of David Jones dad, while working most days in Vaughn Williams Library, and evenings in folk clubs. Malcolm Taylor helped me gather a wonderful collection of broadsides which became the foundation of my book "Anthology of Radical British Songs of Reform c.1768 c.1868" that will soon be printed.

I am not surprised that Malcolm helped. He was a wonderful librarian who would help anyone. It didn't matter if you were a visiting Professor of folklore or a young would-be singer who could only play three chords on your guitar. Malcolm was there for us all.
I think that my best memory (apart from frequent lunches in a near-by pub) was of an early afternoon when the two of us were alone in the VW Library. A man came in and asked about a collection of Scots Gaelic songs. 'You mean this book,' replied Malcolm. 'Could I borrow it?', the man asked. 'Yes. if you are a member.' So the man paid his money, joined the EFDSS and took the book home with him. 'Didn't you recognize him?' I asked Malcolm. Malcolm looked mystified until he looked at the newly completed membership application form. The man was the then Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes.

While working in the library late one afternoon, Malcolm told me that the chap who had been working across the table from me every day had just published a book. He thought I would like it so he loaned his copy to me.
It was called "William Cobbett and Rural Popular Culture" by Ian Dyck. I couldn't put it down. Next time Ian came in I told him. We took up eating and drinking pub food and reducing our productivity in the Library. Ian lived in Vancouver BC taught at Simon Frazer University but sadly he died quite young.
