Subject: RE: Obit: Jim Radford From: Steve Gardham Date: 08 Nov 20 - 01:39 PM Yes, very sad. Jim was always a welcome visitor to his native Hull and for the last few years an everpresent at the Hull Folk and Maritime Festival. We'll keep his memory secure. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jim Radford (1928-2020) - UK Songwriter From: Raggytash Date: 08 Nov 20 - 02:39 PM I had the good fortune to meet Jim when he was promoting a film about the trawler men who risked their lives during WW2 which was being played in the venue I managed. I have seldom met a kinder more open man. I also had the good fortune to share a few pints with him after the show. Rest easy Jim you were one of a rare breed. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Jim Radford (1928-2020) - UK Songwriter From: Raggytash Date: 09 Nov 20 - 04:32 AM I think Jim would tell you he wasn't a "British serviceman" but a member of the Merchant Navy. He was quite specific on that when we talked about it. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jim Radford (1928-2020) - UK Songwriter From: GUEST,Chris Roche Date: 09 Nov 20 - 10:22 AM Sad at the passing of Jim crossing the bar he was a friend we had much in common, I am writing the obit for the magazine Folk London it will appear in their next issue Jim saw things that as a lad he should not have done. It coloured his life although he served in the RN for 8 years and after became a peace campaigner/protester he was not a pacifist, an early member of the Committee of 100 he fought a number of campaigns in the UK very publicly, anti war and for the homeless his politics were to the left of Genghis Khan His name will live long in the songs, Shores of Normandy - Tattie Lads - The Merchant Seaman the first based on his own experiences - the second his brother Fred who served in Rescue tugs - The last for his brother Jack who died at sea in 1940 aged 18 and for all 30000 merchant seamen lost without a grave during WW2. |
