Part of the fabric of the north of England was Gerry, and a scouser par excellence. Liverpool FC will ensure Gerry's immortality, and he was their numero uno fan (or is that me...). But he was wonderful beyond that: Ferry Cross the Mersey, a virtual modern folk song. Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying...But, most of all, You'll Never Walk Alone. As Liverpool fans sign off their posts, YNWA.

Gerry Marsden....I Like It! :-)

That beautiful voice, so many good songs ..... so much a strong part of my adolescence.   Thanks La' (maybe you'll meet up with my Scouser now!)

Vale, Gerry.

Cheers, R-J

Remember seeing him at the Lowlands in West Derby Village long before YNWA.
A great ambassador for Liverpool and will be sadly missed.

Great voice but I never could stand "You'll Never Walk Alone", much prefer his rockier versions of songs like Pretend - not as good as Carl Mann's version of course. RIP

He was a true original of the Merseybeat generation, which sadly is now slipping away.

Sad.. if this is what it takes to get a proper remastered release
of "Ferry Cross the Mersey" movie on DVD/Blu-ray...

Not seen it since it was on afternoon telly about 40 years ago...

The title song is an outstanding classic of it's era.

It's a long time since I listened to the greatest Hits LP
I left boxed at my mum's house.
But I remember enjoying the recordings more than a lot of the pop music
of the early 80s...

The Big Three were the best Merseybeat band!!

Back in the early to mid 70s,
a double LP compilation of merseybeat hits and obscurities,
was released for us young teenagers who were getting fed up with prog rock excesses and elitism..

Even Freddie Starr had a track included on it...

This LP set was one of the earlier seeds sown for the not yet emerging punk rock back to basics movement...

The Undertakers were good too, but The Big Three had the best lead guitarist.

Aside from a drop in pitch in later years, Gerry sounded the same as when I first saw him. Always a great professional and a contemporary of the Beatles and many others who built the Liverpool sound.
Remember Mike Byrne & the Thunderbirds, Joey Day & the Night Hawks, The Clayton Squares & the Swinging Blue jeans to name but a few.

I'm fairly certain this is the Double LP I bought when I was 15 in 1974..

It would have been inspirational around the time the Pub Rock R&B scene
was gaining momentum,
before mutating into punk rock a few years later...

”The Big Three were the best Merseybeat band!!”

Completely agree, Bonz. My band supported them at Lincoln Drill Hall in ‘63 and they were superb. Johnny Gustafson on bass and most of the vocals, Brian ‘Griff’ Griffiths played superb lead guitar, Johnny Hutchinson on drums. A great memory of an amazing little band.

I may have mentioned in another thread that I saw Johnny Gustafson playing bass in The Pirates in 1985, I recorded it of course!

I only saw Gerry once in his heyday, and that was on the famous Roy Orbison/The Beatles 1963 UK tour. I did see him years later on one of those 60s nostalgia show, and he was very good.
Interestingly, his vocals. although not strongly Liverpudlian, do not sound American like so many of the "beat group" bands did.

My experience of Gerry’s live gigs is much like Tunesmith’s : once when he was young and on the rise, and then much later, maybe 10-15 years ago on a 60s show.
I prefer “You’ll Never Walk Alone” as it was in “Carousel “ in 4/4 time rather than 6/8. We played it today in a Zoom band practice!

It's possible I saw him at Barnet Drill Hall around 1963, I remember it was a band from Liverpool but no recollection of which name, whoever it was supported Screaming Lord Sutch & the Savages!!

Did I ever tell you about the time I was calling at a wedding ceilidh and our guitarist/ sound man was having trouble with squawks from the PA. Then we had a visit from another sound man working in a different venue in the same complex. Could we please use this plug in mike as my voice was coming out of Jerry Marsden's guitar amp.
