Gentle Colleagues:

Final call for information leading to the contact of any living family member of the Fresno/Sanger, CA based singer, Otis Pierce. I am producing an album, and licensing a track of his singing. Thanking you in advance, please feel free to respond to my e-mail: zippetywhippetmusic@gmail.com

Cordially,

Deborah Robins

You may have to search in Missouri because I think that's where he was from.

The link Good find, # - I'll betcha that's the right guy. He was born in Sanger in Fresno County - He died in 1981 and he was buried in Sanger. He had eight children, and four are recorded as deceased. But I'll bet there are surviving children in Sanger - apples in Sanger don't fall far from the tree.
I always liked Sanger.

Yes, good suggestion about Find a Grave. I've written to grandson listed from that page, we'll see if I get a reply! Thank you so much!

Deborah

Hi. my email is feyfalen1@gmail.com   Otis Pierce was my uncle. I grew up playing out back behind the bar and the dance hall. Why are you looking for our family? I can help you get in touch with his children if you need to.

Babypix is the producer of a Smithsonian Folkways album called The Village Out West: The Lost Tapes of Alan Oakes. That album is due to be released on September 24. It has 2 CDs of songs by a number of people known to us on the West Coast.

Otis Pierce isn't on this album, maybe because Babypix couldn't find anyone to get permission from.

Hey ho! "Indian Neck Folk Festival's " (now, Circle of Friends Festival) own Alan Oakes kept some mighty fine stereo recordings from the '60s hidden from the public!

We’re thrilled to announce ‘The Village Out West: The Lost Tapes of Alan Oakes,’ a remarkable new collection of music that offers listeners a ringside seat at the early and enthusiastic days of musical discovery in California, out Sept. 24 and available for pre-order today!
(Produced by Deborah Robins, Henry H. Sapoznik and Jeff Place )This compilation challenges the historical preconception that New York’s Greenwich Village was the sole epicenter of folk music in the 1960s,and brings to life the equally vibrant contemporaneous scene that emerged in the San Francisco Bay Area. It includes never-before-heard live performances by Doc Watson, Fred McDowell, Rev. Gary Davis, the New Lost City Ramblers, and Kilby Snow, as well as unsung heroes of the local California communities that turned the region into fertile ground for American music.

All the recordings—from fabled festivals like the Berkeley Folk Music Festival and the Jabberwock, clubs like The Cabale and the Blind Lemon, and innumerable house concerts, workshops, and impromptu interviews—were lovingly and expertly recorded on over 60 open reel tapes by forgotten autodidact documentarian Alan Oakes between 1960 and 1975.
Take a listen to our sampler, which shares a snapshot of the album’s expansive repertoire! These four tracks feature the country blues of Mississippi Fred McDowell, the heavenly harmonies of Kathy & Carol, an old-time, breakdown fiddle tune by Hank Bradley and Rick Shubb with Doc Watson, and the traditional folk duo Larry Hanks and Roger Perkins.

My grandfather was Otis Pierce. Are you still working on a project that includes him?

Wysnom, I've emailed babypix, the editor of the recording, to see if she has any things she needs to discuss with you.

Was Otis a participant in the legendary gatherings at Sweet's Mill above Fresno?

Thank you, Joe for forwarding this message. I’m sorry, Wynsom Krueg, but this collection has been completed, and we were unable to include many we’d hoped we could. Sadly, Otis Pierce was among them
