Subject: RE: Tune Req: Rise up a new years morning From: GUEST Date: 23 Jan 21 - 12:54 AM Hello Thank you for the help. The song is sung by Phil Tanner/Gower Garland. I do not have that CD or album. I am located in the USA. I am so curious about this song. I read somewhere that the song is Welsh. I don't remember exactly where I got that information. I believe I remember the song was from South Wales. This is all I know. I would love to know the melody and lyrics. Thanks again! Rose |

Rose, Calennig sang "Rise Up a New Year's Morning" on their CD "A Gower Garland" which was released in 2000 to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Phil Tanner. They noted: "By the time the Rev J.D. Davies wrote The History of West Gower in 1879, wassailing was a tradition that had died out in Gower apart from the parish of Llangennith, where this song was sung by children on New Year's Morning." A New Year's Song in The History of West Gower Get up, a new year's morning, For the cocks are all a-crowing; Chorus (after each verse): And if you think we are too soon, And if you think we are too soon, Rise up and look at the stars and the moon. A row de dow de dow de dow de row de dow de do Rise and light the fire And make us toast and beer Come, rise and don't be lazy For we are getting crazy Calennig sing Rise Up a New Year's Morning Rise up a New Year's morning For the cocks are all a-crowing Chorus (after each verse): And if you think we are too soon And if you think we are too soon Rise up and look at the stars and the moon Row de dow de, row de dow de, row de dow de day Row de dow de, row de dow de, row de dow de day Rise up and light the fire And bring us toast and beer Rise up and don't be lazy For we are getting crazy |
