I'd seen him probably hundreds of times through my young life without putting his name to his face. A stellar character actor. He played a criminal disguised as a mall santa in a tough little movie with Elliot Gould called "Silent Partner".

He had it all. Looks, stature, acting chops, and maybe even singing as his von Trapp character.

I saw him on Broadway years ago in his one-man show as John Barrymore. A marvelous actor. Few people could command a stage like him. Only sorry I never got to see him do Shakespeare.

However, as far as music goes, in The Sound of Music his singing voice was dubbed by Bill Lee.

It reminded me of staying in hotel in Salzburg which was full of people who were all on a Sound of Music tours. Still, at least Mozart's birthplace wasn't busy.

I never knew that Christopher Plummer was originally a trained concert pianist, but instead went for an acting career A long age for anyone, but sad that it was an accidental fall that got him.

I believe he had ambitions and some training to become a concert pianist, but didn't actually achieve that lofty peak, being sidetracked by acting ... no? Apparently, he knew the jazz-pianist Oscar Peterson in high school in Montreal - but until the obit. notices, I was unaware that he too, in his youth, was a serious pianist.

Theodore Bikel opposite Mary Martin),

I had to look up Bill Lee, who has a page at imdb dot com.
And the latter was born in 1916,
so at the time The Sound of Music was filmed,
he would have been near fifty years of age. Not bad.

Edelweiss. That'll do me. I even heard the old ladies at St Mary's in Radcliffe turning it into a hymn in the days I when was herded into midnight Mass. Heheh. All the young dudes stood at the back (Fr O'Hora gave them a very un-Christmassy bollocking one year, and I thought, blimey, at least they've come to Mass!) because with all that Christmas Eve beer inside 'em they'd never survive a whole hour without sneaking out for a pee. Though the flippin' plant in question is just a glorified cudweed...

Many memories of Christopher Plummer. But I particularly remember him as the narrator of the Madeline cartoons - "In an old house in Paris ...".

Christopher Plummer came from quite a remarkable family. His great great great grandfather, John Bethune from the Isle of Sky, was a Presbyterian minister who served in North Carolina, Nova Scotia, Montreal (established the first Presb. congregation there), then moved to Glengarry County and ministered to the Gaelic speaking immigrants. His great grandfather was Sir John Abbott, the first native born Canadian Prime Minister. John Bethune was also the gr gr grandfather of Dr Norman Bethune, a famous/infamous Canadian Communist surgeon who served in the Spanish Civil war and in the China of Mao Tse-tung.
