MacDara Yeates announced in the course of an online singing session for the Seamus Ennis Arts Centre that Joe Burke had died during the time we were singing and listening.

Yes, a fine box player, one if the best- living in St Louis, last time I heard?
One story about him was that when he once fell off the stage in mid-tune, he got up & before picking up the tune, explained 'me thumbstrap broke'
That's second hand, but came from a reliable source & sounds plausible!

I saw Joe playing in Newcastle and booked him for Llantrisant Folk Club - a wonderful, unique musician and a model house guest.

The Lord Burke; toured the North East several times in the company of Sean Maguire and Josie Keegan. A fine musician and jovial company. RIP Joe.

So very sad to hear of the passing of another true legend of Irish Music - Galway's Own - Joe Burke. Joe was a leading light in Irish music, a font of musical knowledge, an inspiration to us all for decades (indeed the absolute blueprint for many), a light hearted gentleman who was encouraging to younger musicians along the way and a consummate professional on the stage. The first album that my Dad ever bought me was 'The Funny Reel' which Joe made in 1979 with Andy McGann and Felix Dolan - This music was the soundtrack of my childhood. It was very special to be able to welcome Joe to Return to Camden Town Festival in 2007, when he performed alongside Felix Dolan and Brian Conway after the release of their 'Tribute to Andy McGann' album - that was some gig! Sending sincerest of sympathies to Anne Conroy-Burke and all of Joe's close family and friends. May he rest in peace Kx

Joe and his wife Ann gave a great powerful night of Irish box playing when they played for us at the Royal Oak in Lewes many years ago.

I remember going to a recording of a BBC Scotland concert for their folk music programme in Edinburgh decades ago. The two memorable performances were by The Boys of The Lough and by Joe. As well as compering the concert, Archie Fisher was interviewing the artists. Joe seemed a little distant and was stumbling over words. He apologised for being rather incoherent but he had been very busy and moving around a lot. He had been in concert in Dublin the night before and the night before that in Seattle and the night before that in Anchorage, Alaska!

Ann is a fine accompsnying guitarist and also a good box player, condolences to ann and family. JOE was an excellent player
