Subject: 'Pipe openers' - songs to warm up with? From: GUEST,BlackAcornUK Date: 21 Feb 21 - 06:29 AM I recently found this British Library recording of Peter Kennedy interviewing Bob Copper; In it, Bob talks about Claudy Banks as a trusted 'pipe opener' - the song they'd commence a session with in order to get the voice tuned up, the lungs filling freely, the confidence flowing etc (and perhaps also, to coax a wider group into joining in?). Do you have any 'go-to' songs, for the same purposes? https://sounds.bl.uk/World-and-traditional-music/Peter-Kennedy-Collection/025M-C0604X0250XX-0001V0 |

Subject: RE: 'Pipe openers' - songs to warm up with? From: The Sandman Date: 21 Feb 21 - 08:23 AM no, when i do a gig , i listen to all the floor singers and residents first before i decide on my first song , flexibilty is the answer, getting a feel of the room and the club. to get the voice armed up the best thing is to do a few vocal exercises take deep breaths and yawn. b |
Subject: RE: 'Pipe openers' - songs to warm up with? From: GUEST,BlackAcornUK Date: 28 Sep 23 - 03:46 AM Just thinking about this again, after singing a bit below par at a session last night... what songs are your 'go-tos' to start an evening off on the right foot? What makes a good pipe-opener? Perhaps songs with a satisfying but readily achievable melodic range; that allow a singer to comfortably get their teeth into it without feeling stretched? Do you find chorus songs better, as they invite the contribution of others, building collective good vibes and covering any early-session vocal wobbles/lapses? Or do you favour a good, gripping ballad that stills the room and earns you extra attentiveness for the rest of the evening? |
Subject: RE: 'Pipe openers' - songs to warm up with? From: GUEST,RJM Date: 28 Sep 23 - 04:07 PM If you are doing a gig , and you are worried about your voice.,then something with a limited range, There is no SUCH thing as a UNIVERSAL good pipe opener, that works for every situation, what you should do are vocal exercises before you start singing, or if you are in a singaround use other peoples choruses to join in with gently, if the situation allows |
Subject: RE: 'Pipe openers' - songs to warm up with? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 29 Sep 23 - 07:01 PM I don’t do whole gigs: more of a “floor-spotter”. I would tend to go for a good chorus song. A favourite if I’ve not been in a particular place for a while would be “It’s good to see you” by Allan Taylor. Otherwise, bearing in mind that I am likely to be singing in a Scottish session, “Bonnie Glenshee” or “Jock Stewart”. |

Subject: RE: 'Pipe openers' - songs to warm up with? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 03 Oct 23 - 07:42 PM Think you need a few vocal warm-ups before attempting Danny Boy! If you don’t pitch it right, that very high note may be unattainable, if you haven’t previously warmed up! |
Subject: RE: 'Pipe openers' - songs to warm up with? From: Steve Gardham Date: 05 Oct 23 - 06:58 AM Got to be a good chorus song well-known to your audience. That gives you confidence and gets the audience onside immediately, and gives you a break to think of the verses. Also a good idea to tell the audience why you are doing this. |
Subject: RE: 'Pipe openers' - songs to warm up with? From: The Og Date: 09 Oct 23 - 12:00 PM For years three of us sang at a local retirement facility. We'd usually open with "There's a Meeting Here Tonight" or an original parody. Here'tis... Country Home Thursday (C) …from “Come on and Join the Air Force or “Son of a Gambolier” or “Ramblin’ Wreck from GA Tech” C G C Tom, Jeff, and Bill can’t get our fill of Country Home Estates, D G Sing our song, it won’t take long you never have to wait, F C G Funny songs and parodies, and hymns we’ve got a bunch, C G C Just stick around, enjoy the sound, ‘n then you’ll go to lunch. F C You’ll go to lunch, you’ll go to lunch, just stick around, G C enjoy the sound, ‘n then you’ll go to lunch. I’m Tom, I’m Jeff, and I am Bill, I think we’ve got it right, Sometimes we sing as one voice, and other times we fight, No matter how you slice it…it often comes out wrong, Just keep your seat but feel the beat, and join us in the song. In the song... We’re here on Thursday mornings of every other week, Hear us in your rooms or…come out and sneak a peek, No one ever told us that we’d be superstars, Singing here just keeps us off the streets and out of bars. And out of bars... |

Subject: RE: 'Pipe openers' - songs to warm up with? From: gillymor Date: 11 Oct 23 - 05:37 AM When I used to perform regularly, usually in a duo, I liked to open with You Ain't Going Nowhere. It was easy to sing, had fairly simple breaks and engaged the audience right off the bat (they'd usually join in on the chorus "Ooo wee riding me high...") and let them know they were in for a good time. |
