Subject: Singing is good for Long Covid and us From: pattyClink Date: 25 Jun 21 - 10:35 AM Turns out singing can be good therapy, paradoxically, for breathing issues in Long Covid, and the article goes on to other uses of song therapy. from Kaiser Health News |

Subject: RE: Singing is good for Long Covid and us From: leeneia Date: 27 Jun 21 - 09:00 AM A long time ago I read an article in a science magazine about children who stutter, and it was noted that those who stutter in speech can often sing smoothly. I thought at the time that the most probable reason for that is that a different part of the brain controls words being sung than words being spoken. Maybe the same is true for Covid sufferers. Maybe a different part of the nervous system handles breathing for singing versus breathing for ordinary times, and after Covid, that part of the nervous system is in better shape. |
Subject: RE: Singing is good for Long Covid and us From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 27 Jun 21 - 09:15 AM leeneia, I once had a colleague who stuttered so badly she could barely speak, but sang like an angel! Song & speech are controlled by different areas of the brain. |
Subject: RE: Singing is good for Long Covid and us From: Jos Date: 27 Jun 21 - 09:39 AM It might be that when people sing they know the words before they start, whereas in everyday speech they need to decide what to say at the same time as they are speaking. |
Subject: RE: Singing is good for Long Covid and us From: JHW Date: 28 Jun 21 - 05:48 AM Re Stuttering reminds me of a certain well known artist who would ring up for bookings. Silence due to stuttering gave away who it was. He never faltered when singing. |

Subject: RE: Singing is good for Long Covid and us From: leeneia Date: 01 Jul 21 - 11:54 AM Naw, Sandman. Even people who don't have an okay voice (and there are few such people) can sing around the house and in the car. Or the shower. I'm thinking of benefits of such singing: It encourages good, deep breathing. It sends air in and out of the body from the bottom of the lungs to the tops of the sinuses. It stops unhappy thoughts for the while. It stimulates the brain and brings back memories. It makes boring chores go faster. It pleases loved ones. Who wouldn't be happy to hear a relative who has been sick for months now singing in the kitchen? |
