Subject: BERT! Started some lyrics for ya!
From: katlaughing
Date: 13 Jan 00 - 09:21 PM

Hey, Bert and everyone else, I was trying to nap this afternoon, when a silly song Billy Connolly sings about his "wellies" came to mind; then some words came to mind, no tune, and they seemed to be of a genre you might enjoy, so, no nap and.....here's a start, please anyone feel free to add on:

Confiscate my galoshes
Take my rubbers please
I've done with mucking horses arses
It's come up to my knees

I'd like to hang out in my wellies
In a fine and clover scent
So all the pretty lasses know
That I'm a gent

Kat, I didn't know if you were waiting for some lines from Bert or if anyone could add a few, but I'm in such an elated state from making my first link, I thought I'd take a chance. Hope the lyrics didn't go somewhere you didn't intend.

Thank you!

Dear Mbo,

If you're going to do your verses in the Highland dialect, could you *please* provide translations for the folks that do not understand that dialect? That way, everyone can enjoy the words!

Thanks, Áine

A reasonable request, Áine, though I will say that reading scots dialect really isn't (IMHO) any harder then deciphering the spelling on high school papers, and a GREAT deal easier than reading the grocery list my family writes.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE WELLY BOOT SONG (Billy Connolly)
From: katlaughing
Date: 14 Jan 00 - 11:59 AM

Love it, Embow!

Áine, if we do put the other two verses in dialect, let's do them side by side of all verses, so there's two versions, okay? T'anks!

Met: here's Billy's song. I am afraid my little effort doesn't come close in calibre. Others of his lyrics can be found here

THE WELLY BOOT SONG
(Billy Connolly) (from the LP "The Pick of Billy Connolly")

CHORUS: If it wasn't for your wellies where would you be?
You'd be in the hospital or infirmary,
'Cause you would have a dose of the flu or even pleurisy,
If you didn't have your feet in your wellies.

Oh, wellies they are wonderful! Oh, wellies they are swell,
'Cause they keep out the water and they keep in the smell,
And when you're sitting in a room, you can always tell
When some bugger takes off his wellies. CHORUS

Oh, and when you're out walking in the country with a bird,
And you're strolling over fields just like a farmer's herd,
And somebody shouts, "Keep off the grass," and you think, "How absurd!"
And SQUELCH you find why farmers all wear wellies. CHORUS

There's fishermen and firemen, there's farmers and all,
Men out digging ditches and working in the snow.
This country it would grind to a halt and not a thing would grow
If it wasn't for the workers in their wellies. CHORUS

Oh Edward, Heath and Wilson they haven't made a hit.
They're ruining this country more than just a bit.
If they keep on the way, they're going we'll all be in the (shhhhh)
So you'd better get your feet in your wellies. CHORUS

Wonderful Mbo! would it be a travesty of the language to use the word "hund" or "hound" instead of "dug" so it will still rhyme?

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BERT! Started some lyrics for ya!
From: Mbo

Met, I was JUST thinking about that. Sure "dug" is fun, but we have to honor the rhyme structure. I tried looking up words that would rhyme with "dug" in Scots Dialect meaning ground or earth, but to no avail. I'm sure "hoond" would work fine! BTW I wrote a tune written, but I'm not going to be able to make a midi of it until Monday night.

Confiscate my galoshes

I've done with mucking horse arses
It's come up to my knees

I'd like to hang out in my wellies
In a fine and clover scent
So all the pretty lasses know

I'm off to the hunt and the hound

The rich believe they're deserving their luck
The poor are not quite so sure
They may aspire to the carriage trade
But will still stand knee deep in manure.

A toast now to the Welly
Let their praises ever be sung
For nothing is so uncommonly fine
When scooping up the dung

The King of all the boot race
Who's match have never been met
When rambling from the Highland snow
Or the hills all soggy and wet!

So whether your high or your low-brow
In the company of farm animals or snoots
This one rule you should remember
You will always require you boots.

Well katmyluv...I think he's at annaps, but I don't know for sure. In any case, he has CRS and probably doesn't remember himself. But who needs him? Y'all have been doing just a TREMENDOUS job without him!!! And besides the fine work, something else in this thread triggered another thought...I guess Meebo's work...although its done a good bit here, made me think longingly of our old friend Cuilionn.

I wonder what happened to her. She was so wonderful and fun.....and no one has ever equalled her in writing Braid Scots. I would read her posts repeatedly, just enjoying the flow as though I could actually hear her! I remember Karen bringing me the messages in the hospital and reading them ALL over and over...but Cuilionn's was just so special and different.

For those of you who never knew her, look back on some of her postings.... Here's a Sample and the follow-up message to it. Hope the blue clickies are having a good night. If not, just look up some of her stuff. Hope she's OK.

GREAT THREAD here folks.....Just a bang-up job........

MORE!!!! MORE!!! BRAVO!!! AUTHORS!!!! BRAVO!!!

Mbo, don't forget to send the tune to Alan to put on the Midi page when you finish it, and also, to let me know when he's posted it, so that I can put a link to it on the Songbook.

Once again, I'm amazed at the talent here on the 'Cat. Like I said before, it don't get better than this!! (Well, except for when the Stars win a hockey game . . .)

Subject: ADD: If ye didnae have yer wellies

This page (click) has lyrics to two versions, with tentative attribution to Billy Connolly. Anybody have a more accurate version?
-Joe Offer-

If ye didnae have yer wellies, where would ye be
youd be in the hospital or infirmareeeeeeee
you could have a dose o the flu, or even pleurisyyyeee
if ye didnae have yer feet in yer wellies!

Oh wellies they are wonderful
oh wellies they are swell
cos they keep out the water
but they keep in the smell

CHORUS
If it wasn't for your wellies where would you be
You'd be in the hospital or infirmary
'Cause you would have a dose of the flu or even pleurisy
If you didn't have your feet in your wellies

Oh wellies they are wonderful, oh wellies they are swell
'Cause they keep out the water and they keep in the smell
And when you're sitting in a room you can always tell
When some bugger takes off his wellies

CHORUS

Oh and when you're out walking in the country with a bird
And you're strolling over fields just like a farmer's herd
And somebody shouts, "Keep off the grass" and you think how absurd
and SQUELCH you find why farmers all wear wellies

CHORUS

There's fishermen and firemen, there's farmers and all
Men out digging ditches and working in the snow
This country it would grind to a halt and not a thing would grow
If it wasn't for the workers in their wellies

CHORUS

Oh Edward, Heath and Wilson they haven't made a hit
So you'd better get your feet in your wellies

CHORUS

It's not 'cause' but 'fer'. "Fer you would have a dose of the flu..."
(Youtube version, Billy singing it in 1976)

And "wasnae" rather than "wasn't".
Don't think anyone on the thread has mentioned that the tune is from the much older song "The Work o' the Weavers" by David Shaw.(1776-1856). Billy's song has some lines that are part parody.
Shaw's song is in the DT as "the Work of the Weavers"

I was hoping you'd come along Tattie. I only lived in Glasgae for a few years, (loved it!) and you know better than I. 'If it wasnae fer yer wellies' is exactly right.

Hee hee! Hello Gallus! Yes, I too pronounce it 'wisnae' but ah wisnae too sure how tae spell it. How often one of my darling six year-old Glasgae pupils would plead, "It wisnae me miss." !
In the Youtube video, 1976, Billy looks so young. But the audience just sit there unmoved and don't look terribly impressed or amused by his song. In Norfolk we'd call them a bunch of staaarched faaaarts!

There is also Fred Dagg's 'Gumboot Song.' There's a copy on Youtube, and that is the version popular here in the antipodes.

One year at Sabhal Mor Ostaig (Skye) there was an African group of male singers/dancers (whose name escapes my but i shall find the cd or possibly it was a cassette....)visiting - maybe as part of the annual festival on Sleat Peninsula? They ran a dance workshop during the day, and did an evening performance of songs and dances....wonderful! One of the highlights was their welly boot dance - nothing like Billy Connolly's tho!! Think it was in celebration of working on railway construction? (Ma memory is rubbish...)

Could have been the Black Umfolosi 5? I saw them both in Edinburgh and at Sidmouth Festival: tremendous! There are lots of "Gumboot Dancers" on YouTube, but here are the BU5: Gumboot dancing came originally from South African miners, when they were forbidden to speak to each other.

During my early days as a teacher here in Norfolk (after I arrived from Scotland forty years ago!), a fabulous troupe of Senegalese dancers/musicians came to the Theatre Royal in Norwich, and I took my entire class of 9yr-olds to an evening performance. They were entranced, and afterwards the performers came out into the foyer to talk to my children, but in French, so I had to translate.
During the following week, we did no end of art, poetry, geography and so on about West Africa.

GM: there are lots of versions of Shosoloza on YouTube, both S African and Zimbabwean.
Senofou: bet your kids loved that!
