Subject: Tune Add: Fried Hockey Boogie (Canned Heat) From: voyager Date: 06 Oct 21 - 03:59 PM In a memorable UK music moment, by BT pal, Eddie Manning, once requested I bring a Canned Heat record with me on my UK travels to Martlesham Heath (circa mid '90s). On a Friday afternoon, we visited the Douglas Bader pub in Martlesham. The owner was a Canned Heat fan and we blasted the speakers with a sound like this - Fried Hockey Boogie (Canned Heat) 'and don't forget to boogie' voyager |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Fried Hockey Boogie (Canned Heat) From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 06 Oct 21 - 06:08 PM I have met both Fito and the late Henry Vestine. I have a signed copy of living the Blues somewhere. In my distant youth I saw Al Wilson back up Son House at the 100 club in London. Ask me anything about the Heat and I may know the answer! The story of London Blues is fun! Not to mention 'The Canned Heat Mama!' a story of groupies and impotence. Why was Henry the Sunflower, Why was Larry the Mole etc, I did a radio documentary on them for the BBC. |

The Canned Heat were a major force in our SoCal music scene ('60s-70s). The Al Wilson bio is a hit https://www.amazon.com/Blind-Owl-Blues-Mysterious-Legend/dp/0615792987 Tell us more.... 'and don't forget to boogie' (lol) voyager |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Fried Hockey Boogie (Canned Heat) From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 06 Oct 21 - 07:06 PM No I've left the BBC. All my work was erased. What do you want to know? Henry spoke to me two weeks before he was found dead in a French hotel. He was still playing remarkably well when I saw him, and still bouncing around like a flower in the wind. (The Sunflower) The Bear was long gone. Overloaded his heart with drugs and passed away. Both his brother (The Flame) and his kids are gone now. We lost the Mole a while back. (Deep down bass hence the Mole). the Canned Heat Mama declared herself in Tampa Florida, and the whole band were so knocked out by her, they were all (temporarily) out of action, until Fito got it together. Poor Al had terrible problems in that department, hence his failure with women and suicide. London Blues tells how he was taken for a fool and fleeced by a London based woman who used him as a cash cow. He deserved better. The Bear never got over his death. The building once owned by Elvis then bought by the Bear, and housed John Mayall (who lived up a tree there !!) is a sad derelict wreck. Why? drug use. Sad sad sad! A bad luck band, but when they got it right.... |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Fried Hockey Boogie (Canned Heat) From: voyager Date: 06 Oct 21 - 07:58 PM @nick - sounds a lot like the blues to me. The Sunflower (Henry Vestine), 'born on Christmas Day, in Takoma Park, MD. (a town I lived in for 20 years). Al Wilson, roommate of John Fahey for a spell. Canned Heat House (Topanga Canyon) Canned Heat (Woodstock 1968) Fito De La Parra (Canned Heat Drummer) outlived the other band members. thanks for bringing there story into the 21st century. .... and don't forget to boogie' voyager |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Fried Hockey Boogie (Canned Heat) From: rich-joy Date: 07 Oct 21 - 02:40 AM Sad stories, Nick, but like you say, when they got it right ....! An important part of the soundtrack of my youth, even down in Oz. Cheers, R-J |
