Lead Belly: The Man Who Invented Rock and Roll

"No Lead Belly, no Beatles", said George Harrison. He was the 1st record Janis Joplin ever bought. Alan Lomax brought his rhythmic songs to the folk music movement - the rest is history. English skiffle literally WAS Lead Belly music. Skiffle lead directly to rock said George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Van Morrison. The definitive bio: insider stories, historic performances, and unmatched archive. Songs and interviews with Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Van Morrison, Tom Jones, John Fogerty, Arlo Guthrie, Odetta, Harry Belafonte, Willie Nelson and special contributions from the Ledbetter family

Director

Curt Hahn

Will try to catch it next Friday: I saw that it was on tonight, but got caught up in something else! Btw, does anyone know if Sky Arts has a catch-up facility for those of us on Freeview?

It doesn't. It's best to record it. You can get a second-hand FreeView recorder, such as a PlusNet YouView box, for £20 or less.

(PlusNet discontinued TV a few months back so anybody who moved to Sky or BT will have a spare box. I had two, but they're so cheap they weren't worth putting on eBay. Newer ones are HD, though Sky Arts on FreeView isn't.)

Thanks DaveRo: we do have a Virginmedia TiVo box so will record it on there. We had to buy a new TV a year or so back, so found we were rarely needing the TiVo box: suggested VM might like to take it away, but they responded By reducing our subscription substantially and telling us we could keep the box!

Did the programme help with a definitive pronunciation of LB's name? See separate thread.

My recollection is that there are a couple of recordings
on which the name HUDDIE is pronounced two different ways by LB.
Much too long ago to remember which recordings - perhaps a
younger person can find them..... One may have been the PUNER recordings which were issued as a bonus disc with the WEAVERS
2CD Omega set.
Cheers, Thomas.
