I found this years ago and got quite excited. Then forgot all about it until a strange quirk of synaptic wanderings brought it back to mind this evening!

'Owd Billy Tilt' (Old William Tyldsley) used to play fiddle at the 'Dinnerings' in the White Lion at Swinton, Home of the folk club that I helped to run for many years before emigrating to Yorkshire :-)

John Adams of the University of Salford had a lot to do with the Village Music Project and, a long time back, he kindly pointed me in the right direction to find it. Subsequently I found out that Tony Weatherall of The Boat Band also had a part to play and when Tony, Greg and Kate came to Swinton they very kindly played us some Billy Tilt tunes :-)

Anyhow - Without further ado, here is the link I first followed

TYLDSLEY, Wm. ms INFO

And here is a link to a PDF of the book itself

https://www.village-music-project.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Tildsley.pdf

I brought it up due to my connections with Swinton but there are loads of other interesting pieces in the Village Music Project and I am sure you are all capable of finding them yourselves :-)

Enjoy!

Thanks for the post, Dave, I wasn't aware of this book. An interesting selection - quite a few tunes I know, some that I don't, that will be worth following up. Quite a bit of military and classical stuff, it would seem, and influences from minstrelsy. Great to know of this music being played in the White Lion 150 years ago.

I hope you enjoy it, Brian. Did you have a look at any of the other stuff? There may be some from nearer you!

Happy new year anyway.

The Kershaw MS from Saddleworth is probably the nearest to me geographically, and there's also the Watts MS from Sparrowpit in the Peak, that I played a small part in getting published. I've got a lot of great stuff from the various books of the Winders of Wyresdale in the past as well.

Interesting different setting of Downfall of Paris in there. 3 parts as against 4, and only the 1st part is the same as the tune as usually played these days. Also Lovely Nancy with 4 parts, I only know 2, though the other 2 seem to be "microvariations" on the first ones.
