THE THREE HUNTSMEN
There were three jovial Welshmen,
As I have heard men say,
And they would go a-hunting, boys,
Upon St David’s Day.
And all the day they hunted,
But nothing could they find,
Except a ship a-sailing
A-sailing with the wind.
And a-hunting they did go

One said it surely was a ship,
The second he said. Nay;
The third declared it was a house
With the chimney blown away.
Then all the night they hunted,
And nothing could they find,
Except the moon a-gliding,
A-gliding with the wind.
And a-hunting they did go

One said it surely was the moon,
The second he said, Nay;
The third declared it was a cheese,
But half was cut away.
Then all next day they hunted,
And nothing could they find,
Except a hedgehog in a bush,
And that they left behind.
And a-hunting they did go

One said it as a hedgehog,
The second he said. Nay;
The third, it was a pincushion
The pins stuck in the wrong way.
Then all next night they hunted.
And nothing could they find,
Except a hare in a turnip field,
And that they left behind.
And a-hunting they did go

One said it surely was a hare,
The second he said. Nay;
The third, he said it was a calf,
And the cow had run away.
Then all next day they hunted,
And nothing could they find,
But one owl in a holly-tree,
And that they left behind.
And a-hunting they did go

One said it surely was an owl,
The second he said. Nay;
The third said ‘twas an aged man,
Whose beard was growing grey.
Then all three jovial Welshmen
Came riding home at last,
‘For three days we have nothing killed
And never broke our fast!’
And a-hunting they did go

Ooh, resembles this old Peggy Seeger children's song:

And we hunted and we hunted and we hunted and we found
A pig in the lane and it we left behind
Look 'ee there!
Some said it was a pig but others said nay
Some said it was an elephant with its snout shot away
Look 'ee there!

And we hunted and we hunted and we hunted and we found
A frog in the well and him we left behind
Look 'ee there!
Some said it was a frog but others said nay
Some said it was a canary with his feathers washed away
Look 'ee there!

And we hunted and we hunted and we hunted and we found
An owl in an ivy bush and it we left behind
Look 'ee there!
Some said it was an owl but others said nay
Some said it was the devil and we all ran away
Look 'ee there!

And we hunted and we hunted and we hunted and we found
A barn in the meadow and it we left behind
Look 'ee there!
Some said it was a barn and others said nay
Some said it was a church with the steeple washed away
Look 'ee there!

And we hunted and we hunted and we hunted and we found
A ship in full sail and it we left behind
Look 'ee there!
Some said it was a ship and others said nay
Some said it was a washed up with the clothes up to dry
Look 'ee there!

And we hunted and we hunted and we hunted and we found
A ball in the road and it we left behind
Look 'ee there!
Some said it was a ball and others said nay
Some said it was a turtle with its legs stucked away
Look 'ee there!

And we hunted and we hunted and we hunted and we found
A child in a bed and it we left behind
Look 'ee there!
Some said it was a child and others said nay
Some said it was a pony gone to sleep on the hay
Look 'ee there!

Yes, The BBC 'Singing Together' (and other) books tend to bring back memories of our first introductions to 'folk' music.

I'll bet there are countless variations of this. The more, the merrier, I say. I grew up with a version by Burl Ives called Three Jolly Huntsmen. I see some definite similarities.

Three Jolly Huntsmen

Ah, three jolly huntsmen,
A-hunting we did go,
We whoop and we holler
And we blow our horns also
Lookey there now!

We whooped and we hollered
And the first thing we did find:
A barn on a hill
And that we left behind
Lookey there now!

One said it was a barn,
One said nay,
One said it was the church
With the steeple cut away,
Lookey there now!

We whooped and we hollered
And the next thing we did find:
A bull-calf in a pen
And that we left behind
Lookey there now!

One said it was a calf,
One said nay,
One said a painted jackass
That never learned to bray,
Lookey there now!

We whooped and we hollered
And the next thing we did find:
Some children leaving school,
These we left behind
Lookey there now!

One said that they were children,
One said nay,
They’re only little angels,
Leave them to their play,
Lookey there now!

We whooped and we hollered
And the next thing we did find:
A pig in the ditch,
And that we left behind
Lookey there now!

One said it was a pig,
One said nay,
One said a politician,
With his clothes stole away,
Lookey there now!

We whooped and we hollered
And the next thing we did find:
A frog in the well
And him we left behind
Lookey there now!

One said it was a frog,
One said nay,
One said it was a jaybird
With the feathers plucked away,
Lookey there now!

We whooped and we hollered
And the next thing we did find:
The moon in the trees
And that we left behind
Lookey there now!

One said it was the moon,
One said nay,
One said it was a cheese
With the half cut away,
Lookey there now!

We whooped and we hollered
And the next thing we did find:
Two lovers in the lane
These we left behind
Lookey there now!

One said they were two lovers,
One said nay,
They’re just two wand’ring lunatics
Let them go their way,
Lookey there now!

We whooped and we hollered
And the next thing we did find:
An owl in the tree
And that we left behind
Lookey there now!

One said it was an owl,
One said nay,
One said it was a ghost,
We all ran away,
Lookey there now!

The Burl Ives version has delighted me from the time I needed to stand on a milk crate to reach the top of a windup Victrolla - which I still have.

How can you get better than ....

Sincerely,
Gargoyle
One said it was a pig

One said, Nay

One said it was a politician with his clothes stole away.
