Ronnie’s unique voice and vocal style is one of my earliest musical memories, and her recordings were part of the musical backdrop to my adolescent years. RIP, lovely lady.

From Ronnie’s official FB Page…

”Family Statement on the Passing of Ronnie Spector:

Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today after a brief battle with cancer. She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.

Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude.

Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her.

In lieu of flowers, Ronnie requested that donations be made to your local women’s shelter or to the American Indian College Fund.

A celebration of Ronnie’s life and music will be announced in the future.

The family respectfully asks for privacy at this time”.

Wikipedia tells her story quite well. Veronica Yvette Bennett was born in 1942, and she and her sister and a cousin formed a "girl group" trio in 1957 - they named the group "The Ronettes" in 1963. They had only one Top Ten hit, Be My Baby, released in 1963. I'm surprised their 1964 Walking in the Rain only his #23. Ronnie married Phil Spector in 1968, and changed her name to Ronnie Spector. Phil Spector was a legendarily abusive husband, and the couple were divorced in 1974. In 1982, Spector married her manager Jonathan Greenfield, and they were married until her death in 2022.
One of my favorite "girl group" singers. May she rest in peace.

I've got her autobiography which really captures the music and the 60s. Her performance on those old b&w footage clips of "Be My Baby" are so full of life. Even if she is miming!

She waged a 15-year lawsuit to get royalties owed her by her ex; her songs were turning up in movies and she didn't get a cent.
