Subject: Tech: English carols field recordings
From: GUEST,Jim Crutchfield

Hello. Don't know if this qualifies as tech, but I'm looking for a recording. Many years ago, I checked an LP out of the library, containing a collection of field recordings of traditional English carols and wassails. I don't remember who issued it, and I've since searched the web for it in vain. It included the "Apple Tree Wassail", the "Cherry Tree Carol", and many others. Tony Barrand & Co. have listened to it, and recorded several of its songs on their "Nowell Sing We Clear" series, but I want the original field recordings. Does this ring a bell with anybody?

Ian Russell has taken an interest in local English carols since 1969.

He released a series of recordings on cassette from different pubs in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire on the Village Carols label.

While the original cassettes may no longer be available, there are several more recent recordings available from the Village Carols website.

Possibly the Songs of Christmas / Songs of Ceremony LP that was part of Peter Kennedy's Folk Songs of Britain series? Info here.

Try contacting - "The Madding Crowd" from Hampshire...they do have a recording; see the link below....
"The Madding Crowd researches and performs the church and secular music of the English village bands and choirs in the period 1660 to 1861."

I agree that this is probably the album suggested by Wm. Sad that these recordings are not currently available.

If you email the VWML they will at least be able to tell you the titles of the tracks on Songs of Ceremony, which is Vol 9 in the series.
