Subject: Tech: Blickifier not working?
From: YorkshireYankee
Date: 04 Feb 22 - 01:11 AM

I've tried a number of times recently (on different days) to make blue clickies and run into problems.

Example: I want a blue clicky for www.sheffieldlive.org/player/

The Blickifier creates a link: www.sheffieldlive.org/player which – when clicked on – results in a 404 not found.

However, if I paste www.sheffieldlive.org/player/ into the address bar, it works fine.

Closer examination shows that even though the blickifier link doesn't seem to add anything, the URL it takes one to is https://mudcat.org//www.sheffieldlive.org/player (the bit in italic is probably why the link doesn't work).

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix for it?

I've noticed that a URL that includes https:// seems to work just fine, so perhaps it's that the problem URLs don't include that. Is the answer to add in that bit?

some time back DaveRo created a simple linkifier that always works because Mudcat's Blue clicky sometimes objects to long URLs.

I've bookmarked it with my Mudcat links & often use it.

ps. I can see the problem with your first link - http:// was omitted.

when the blue clicky sees links without http:// it "knows" that they are pages on mudcat.org

Even if you use the link maker, it's a good idea to know how to make clickable links. Here's how:

<a href="https://www.mudcat.org">Click here</a>

I can't help myself. I'm a purist, and I type all this stuff up and never use the blickifier. It's quicker and never fails. I design entire Websites with raw, naked HTML. Who needs an HTML editor?

aaaggghh - raw, naked HTML

I hate HTML & don't wanna know about it. Some time in 2020 Blogger updated to make blogging easier for phone users (snap pic of cute cat/dog/child - post pic with lotsa' OMGs & emojis) & made if hell for serious bloggers who like to post lotsa' text & photos.

Around the same time Wordpress updated, too & a friend had to re-write half the pages on her blog. At least I didn't have to re-write mine, but creating posts with 20 or 30 images of historical stuff was very slow, to put it mildly & stuff moved about.

Maybe I do need an HTML editor ... but My Personal Help Desk fixes what I can't work around. Eventually, when he has time ...

The blickifier fails on long links, e.g. this recent one of Sandra's:
https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/american-antiquity/article/finding-archaeological-relevance-during-a-pandemic-and-what-comes-after/CB0492613EF4547C1191FBAC57C3F24B

(I might be able to make it automatically generate the link text in cases like that, so you don't have to copy it separately to make a link like:
Finding Archaeological Relevance during a Pandemic and What Comes After )

I can just about manage italics and bold, though even then, more often than not, I have to fix something when I review the post before sending. So doing links would have my knickers in a twist (very painful for us chaps, I can tell you...). Could be something to do with the small size of the typing box and my rotten near-vision when I'm trying to type on my phone or iPad mini. So I just tell everyone what to google... :-(

Fixing links that have that extra mudcat text is one of the main fixes that moderators do in the background. Like Joe, I've been doing html coding for years in various contexts so I hand-type them in.

If you want to remember how but don't do it often enough, you might want to create a little virtual Sticky Note that lives on a corner of your desktop screen. Windows has one I use, where I keep a few chunks of code I use regularly that I don't want to look up. Post the code that Joe presented above on a sticky note then use it as your template.

Nope. If you mouse over the preview you should be able to see what the link says (at the bottom of your browser). This has the Mudcat.org/www.sheffield error

It's true; it goes 404. Nothing happens when I check the box or mouse over Preview.

I'll deal with Preview some other time.

The mistake I used to make in the blickifier was pasting the whole https://mudcat.org... etc for a Mudcat link but now I remember that with Mudcat links I only use the part from /mudcat.org... onwards. So instead of pasting in the whole address for this thread https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=170973&messages=13 I now remember to only paste this part in: /mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=170973&messages=13

Leeneia, your problem is the opposite: you need to include the https:// part otherwise the clever little blickifier thinks you are making a Mudcat link.

Subject: RE: Tech: Blickifier not working?
From: Joe Offer

Leeneia, your link is missing the https://. You can copy my template and paste it into a message box. Then replace the red stuff with whatever you want. You can also replace the blue stuff according to preference., if you want something more innovative than "click here."

Since I can't play guitar, I've spent most of my adult years trying to convince women that "raw, naked HTML" was sexy. This has not worked out particularly well for me. They still think I'm a nerd.

Sandra, thanks for the explanation of why leaving off the https:// is a problem. And thanks also to DaveRo, Stilly and Joe.

Joe, I am impressed by those who engage in "raw, naked html", but I married a nerd myself, so I would think that's a feature rather than a bug... ;-)

Like Steve, I can manage the tags for bold and italic, but have to check in preview that I've not messed up somehow. I could have worked out the formula for links from looking at the blickifier, but the blickifier is (usually) easier and I'm lazy...

Yup. Notepad is what I use. But I do confess to using Excel for things that need repetition. But then I paste it into Notepad.

Helen wrote: ... but now I remember that with Mudcat links I only use the part from /mudcat.org... onwards.
Mudcat used to have servers with different names, starting awe, etta, etc. That was why, if you used a URL that contained 'mudcat.org' the blickifier chopped off the http:xxx.mudcat.org part and generated a 'relative link', usually starting 'thread.cfm'. That ensured that anybody clicking it got the page on the same server - awe or etta, say - they were already using.

Since mudcat changed to https that code usually doesn't work, it generates invalid links to mudcat pages. It works if the URL starts http - not https - which it never does, unless you typed or modified it yourself. Or you can enter a relative link yourself, as I think Helen does. And mudcat no longer uses multiple server names so the entire relative link thing is redundant. But, because the blickifier still contains this code, it trips up people like the OP who leave off the http or https part so this 'clever' code thinks you want a relative link.

So if you always use addresses starting https (or http) the blickifier should work. Apart from links to mudcat itself where the easiest way is to change https to http. And apart from long addresses.

Or you could just bookmark and use this one which avoids those problem:
Simple Linkifier

If you leave out the http it will add it for you ;)

Thanks for the explanation, DaveRo.

While we're discussing Mudcat tech (with people who use "raw, naked html", no less!), I have another question:
Sometimes I want to link to a specific post in a Mudcat thread. To do this, I go to the top of the thread where it shows who has commented, and try to figure out which comment is the one I want, then click on it and – if it's the right one – I copy the URL in my browser's address bar. If it's not, I go back to the top and repeat the process until it takes me to the comment/message I want.

Is there a way to figure out what an individual message's URL is if I've scrolled down to it instead? I'm hoping so, because it would definitely be quicker and easier than my hit-and-miss method. It looks to me like the URL stays the same when scrolling up/down a thread, but I'm probably missing something...

I'm not sure I'm following you but if you want links as you would get them from the top, I can't see a straightforward way. You could hover over the post's "Printer Friendly" link and that should (at least it does with my Firefox) show you the message_id. eg. Helens's last post before your question is 4135305. Now you want to tag that on the end of the usual thread link preceding it with a #.

https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=170973#4135305

Yor purpose may be better served by just using the Printer Friendly link though.

I concur: Notepad is the best for html code. It doesn't load it up with crap like you get from Word, Wordpad, etc. I work on a website where a couple of employees back the woman didn't know code so put everything in Word then saved as a web page. That adds so much crap to the code, that's the number one thing I do now, is fix her old broken code.

I use Linux not Windows, and there are equivalents of Notepad in Linux - simple text editors - but I wouldn't use them to write html, or any other code. For a code editor I want:
- code folding - to collapse a long structure into a single line so you can see the bigger picture
- auto indenting
- syntax checking - so you don't introduce unmatched tags or brackets
- syntax highlightling - to show the structure with colours
- good search and replace features
- some other things that I forget at the moment

For simple html or code - like that linkifier - I use BlueFish, which is really old (1997!) but I'm used to it.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluefish_(software)

(For bigger programming projects I use Atom, because it's Open Source and handles Git and Github.)

I don't know what the equivalent for Windows is - maybe Notepad++ - though I've never used it.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notepad%2B%2B

C'mon guys! Writing html in Notepad is like digging the garden with a hand trowel. You don't need a mechanical digger, but why not try a spade? ;)

YorkshireYankee, a quick trick to put a link to a specific post is to go the post you want and click on the name of the person who posted. It takes you to a list of all the posts made by that person, but if you have taken note of the thread name, the date and time of the post you can do a search on that list and use the link for that specific post.

Your post where you asked the question was:

RE: Tech: Blickifier not working? 05-Feb-22 - 03:34 PM

When you go to the list of your posts just look for that and use the link to create the blicky. To make it a bit easier you can open the list of posts in a new tab so you can go back to the thread to find the one you are specifically interested in.

Coming back to Garg’s comment, “Real Programmers” (what ever they are) would probably want
vi, Emacs or if really bold ed rather than this notepad thing… ;-)

As for the what to use. For my Mudcat posts, I may post straight into the text area. I usually use LibreOffice Writer otherwise.

I have churned a fair amount of HTML out in the past but the bulk of that has been produced via php. I want at a code editor for that and features including syntax highlighting and matching brackets are important to me

I can’t remember what I used with folkinfo but think I probably finished up using Eclipse with its pdt plugin.

YorkshireYankee
re to link to a specific post in a Mudcat thread
https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=170973#4135375

1 - unless I'm using notepad(ColorNote on my tablet),,,, I click the 'Preview' box !

I haven't got the memory cells to do the 'try to figure out' ,,, so
2 - I copy the datestamp of the post
05 Feb 22 - 03:34 PM
(or even just 03:34 )

then
3 - do a 'find in page' search.

etc

Emily Ezust of the LiederNet Archive
schooled me patiently in how to use raw naked HTML
when I didn't even know what the heck it was.
All because I was interested in song lyrics.

And I agree, I too use it to make blue clickies here.
