I´m not an english native speacker and some sounds are impossible for me to recognize. I was hoping that Joe Offer may have kept a copy of the final version we all worked out based on the version by The Fureys as posted by GUEST,Einar McCarthy. I suspect we might have to re-do our homework because the dog must have ate it all up. :-) |

My suggestions have an asterix either side e.g. *Rattle*. Verse 1: Twas late in the night when the squire came home Inquiring for his lady The servants all replied she`s gone She's away with the Gypsy Davey Chorus: *Rattle* for the Gypsy, Gypsy, *Rattle* for the Gypsy Davey [Note: I am fairly confident that the singer is pronouncing "rattle" and also in some of my searches the song title is referred to as "Rattle for the Gypsy". Also, my last posting on the thread before it went to data-heaven with the site-crash angels was that I am really not sure what the phrase "rattle for the Gypsy" means and that maybe because I am in Australia I am missing the context. That line confused me when I first read it because she is saying she is happy and staying with the Gypsy, so why would she be dead unless her poor, unhappy husband shot her? But no, she's alive and happy. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Helen Date: 29 Jul 22 - 05:33 AM A friend from Ireland sent a few CD's out to our group of musical friends and the first tune I am listening to is The Two William Davises on an album called Harp to Heart by a harper called Kathleen Loughnane. I realised that some parts of the tune remind me of the version of Gypsy Davey by The Furey Brothers. The note under the video I linked to says: "In some quarters Turlough O'Carolan is credited with composing this tune, while other sources reckon it's a much older tune & believe that Carolan just put words to this tune." The liner notes to the tune in Kathleen Loughnane's album are: "There are various versions of this tune carried in the aural tradition both here [in Ireland] and in Scotland. As an O'Carolan tune this is known as Planxty Davis, but it would seem that it was composed by his predecessor, harper-composer Thomas Connellan, from County Sligo. In Scotland, where Connellan spent some years, it is known as The Battle of Killeckrankie." So, is it just for me that listening to The Two William Davises sounds similar to Gypsy Davey, or can other people hear it too? An enquiring mind - or maybe a mind which has lost its faculties - would really like your thoughts on this. :-) |

I was able to retried a lot of threads - but if a thread had been posted to before I got to the Google Cache, the cache was updated and the messages disappeared. Library of Congress and archive.org didn't have scans of Mudcat from just before the crash, so they couldn't help. But I got a lot from the Google Cache. |
