Very remiss of me not to post sooner as I have had the sad news since the 5th of April. From Facebook -

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the passing of one of the founders of Cleckheaton Folk Festival. Geoff Pickles who has been involved with the festival for over 30 years passed away yesterday morning and will now be singing at the great Folk Festival in the sky. He will be sadly missed by all the friends of the festival.

I first met Geoff at Whitby where we and a number of others discussed running our own folk festivals. Both Swinton and Cleckheaton festivals were born from that conversation and a long lasting bond between our folk clubs was established. We had 'exchange visits' between Swinton and Cleckheaton many times, usualy involving far too much drink and once resulting in Geoff losing his van keys and being unable to make his egg delivery in the morning! He shall be sorely missed in many places. RIP Geoff. Reunited with Jan.

The funeral is on Tues 03 May at 2.45 p.m at Dewsbury Crematorium. Then afterwards at the Wickham Arms in Cleckheaton.

Sadly I will be unable to make it as I am undergoing a surgical procedure at that time but my thoughts will be with his family and friends.

Sad news - when a friend moved down to Morley from Hartlepool I was an occasional visitor to Morley Folk Club. Geoff was always very friendly and welcoming

Sad news indeed. I lived in Cleckheaton for over ten years until moving to Scotland and got to know Geoff not only from the folk festival but at Cleckheaton folk festival.

he organised a club and that was a positive thing to do, he tried to get people work, and tried to help the community.
I played his club once maybe twice, he paid me the agreed fee, so i had no complaints.
anyone that tries to organise a club etc is trying to be positive.
RIP Geoff.
