I'm very much alive, though aged in years - 78 in a month or two - and still making music. Less music than in previous years - partly because Covid savaged all gigs for a good 15 months and partly because I've been doing a lot of painting (art not decorating!). I've also decided to give up regular band/gigging work - which I've done for the best part of 55 years - hang up my amp and just make music purely for fun with friends.

As happens once every 15 years or so, I've been exploring new (to me) forms of music. In particular I've become entranced by the playing of French bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons - "the Paganini of the double bass" and his love of Mediterranean and North African musical forms. And I've also returned, yet again, to my old love for Davy Graham's music - old dog, old tricks :-)

I occasionally take a peek at Mudcat but, alas, don't often see much to bother about these days. No offence to Mudcat - just that my interests are slightly different these days.

Donuel - thanks for contacting me via my website - very thoughtful of you.

Hi Will! Did you ever record the Waltz of the Bells that you also kindly did the music for me for?

Hi Dave - no, I never got around to it. Mea culpa. If I get time I'll dig out the tab and do it...

All of Renaud's albums are excellent, but it was hearing Silk Moon that got me hooked - ravishing sounds!

Hi Helen - modesty forbade me from commenting! I always enjoyed playing with Alan and missed him when he moved to Suffolk. He visited us with Jenny about a year or so ago and we had a good natter. Hopefully, we'll meet up again before we get too old to do so...

He has a great way with tunes and plays with great zest.

Hi Will,

The story about Rosbif Waltz is that someone in our amateur music group in Newcastle, Australia found it in a book nearly 25 years ago so we started playing it and then there was a Mudcat thread about it - because I had shared the tune with another Mudcatter at a folk festival - and Alan kindly sent me some cassette tapes of the band Rosbif.

Tune Req: Rosbif Waltz

Also, I forgot to say that listening to the Renard Garcia-Fons music reminded me of this song:

Abdel Gadir Salim - Bassama

I have a 3 CD set called Africa Never Stand Still and I think that this is one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard.
