I’ve recently found a cassette recording of the final night of the Waggon Inn Folk Club, 13th May 1984, where Jolly Jack, the residents, were supported by a number of those that had been regular attendees of the Club over the years.

Am so enjoying listening to these!!
Loved JJ since 'catter, Tony in Darwin, brought the glorious "Long Time Travelling" and "Wheels of Time" to our No Strings Attached singing rehearsal in the late 80s.
They've all passed on now, but thankfully we can still enjoy their harmonies and humour.

Thanks Roger. What a marvelous band and folk club. Only just started listening and am on hols at the moment so can't do much but I did skim through a few. Can you put names to all the acts? I did spot a certain Mr Accrington in there :-)

Thank you so much, Roger, listening to JJ in full flow with wonderful choruses from the audience has made me feel quite emotional. Still one of my favourite bands ever, and a great folk club too. Their 'Long-Time Travelling' knocked spots off versions by far more celebrated singers. Oh, and I've just spotted Russell Clegg, who played bass on my first LP around this time!

Martin, as well as being a wonderful musician and singer, was also a master builder. He did a lot of work for us with his mate, Billy, who was also a fine guitarist. They were worth hiring to do work as they were also a good comedy double act. One particular occasion, while they were renewing our kitchen ceiling, Martin was giving Billy some earache about something so Billy decided to take a break in the back garden. Leaving Marting on top of the stepladder with a full sized plaster board balanced on his head. The air was blue... :-D

I can just imagine the scene, Dave!

My favourite Martin Hall story was about a party at which he was introduced to Martin Carthy by a third party, with the words: 'Martin.... meet Martin... he's a musician too!'

MH was reported to have said to MC: 'Hullo... are you any good, then?'

I've had some great feedback since uploading this tape, it's a shame that so few recordings exist of Jolly Jack.

If anyone out there has any that they'd like to share with me, please get in touch. I'm happy to upload any to YouTube to be shared with their fans but also for their families to enjoy.

Veronica (Hall) would love to hear them singing "Peggy Gordon" but I’ve not any luck finding a recording so far.

They recorded two vinyl lps, which I have, and also had tracks includedon some 'compilation' cds. I'm looking for any recordings that were made of them performing 'live' that someone might have.

I really enjoyed listening to that. Pity it isn't radio quality. The transmission compressor would make the tape hiss unbearable. But there were songs there I haven't heard for over 40 years, sung with great humour in a great atmosphere. A sound example of how folk clubs used to be.
