Pete Ryder sadly passed away this morning. A brilliant artist and good friend who will be greatly missed for both his music and his presence. Back in Mar 2006 he appeared at the White Lion in 'an audience with Pete Ryder' and I was lucky enough to be there and record it. OK, it was a pretty crappy recording on a cheap camcorder from Woolies but I managed to digitise it and, if I have done it right, you should be able to link to it here -

An audience with Pete Ryder

RIP Pete. Enjoy the Wild Turkey with Nat Shapiro and have a good sit-down song and dance.

Sorry to hear that, I only met Pete a handful of times over the years, the last time was at the MSG Reunion in 2011, and he always seemed a genuinely lovely guy.

He had some good tales about the MSG :-)

Slight correction to my opening post. It was an audience AND Pete Ryder. Not with.

So sorry to read this, Pete and I always got on well on the rare occasions we met going back to the early 70's in the Cross Keys in Eccles. Great singer/sonwriter and a brilliant guitarist.

I just remembered something I must add. Many years back I went to see Martin Carthy at the Lowry in Salford. It was a bit before Swinton Folk Festival time so I took some flyers for distribution. At the end of the concert I spoke briefly to Martin and he took a few flyers. Looking at the guest list he said "Pete Ryder. I know him. Good guitarist." :-D

Sad news. I have added his name the the "In Memoriam" thread and send my condolences to all those who know and love him. He was a very accomplished singer and guitarist who will live on through his music. RIP

A brilliant guitarist and song writer who will be sadly missed. I used to see Pete at The Cross Keys in Eccles M/c back in the day. The last time I saw and had a chat with Pete, was at one of The Cleckheaton Folk Festivals a few years ago. RIP.

This is the note I got from Sara, Pete's widow, the other day

Hi folks

Most of you will already know that Pete died on 22nd November 2022 peacefully in hospital after a fall at home.

For those of you that didn't know, many apologies, but it's been a very tough time and, no doubt, there will be conversations and tears in the weeks and months to come. There are bound to be people who have not been contacted, and who should have been, please let them know if you can.

There has already been an outpouring of tributes, flowers and cards, which has been a great comfort.

Hopefully, you can join us at Peel Green Crematorium for the committal and a celebration of Pete's various careers and varied life. Please get in touch via email, if you would like to say a few words, and either myself or one of his friends can read out your tribute if you can't do it in person.

The celebration is very informal, like the man. Leather jackets and Converse baseball boots (and a rolled up cigarette) are recommended but not obligatory.

There will also be an opportunity to play some music and talk about Pete afterwards at the Worsley Road Sports and Social Club, 11 Worsley Road, Swinton M27 5WN.

For those far-flung folks who are unable to attend, the celebration will be 'live-streamed' for which the details are:

No flowers, please send donations to
The Children's Society via the funeral directors: Broadoak FD who have arranged the Tribute/Donation page for Pete which can be accessed via their website:

Their telephone number is 0161 794 7499 if there is a problem.

Sara xx
