Which cities have the best trad folk scenes in the US? Things like Celtic trad, English trad, American old time, sea shanties, etc. I know from a friend that Minneapolis has a big trad folk scene (I heard they have 5 Morris sides), any other big ones?

I belong to both the San Francisco Folk Music Club and the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (DC). The folk music in both places is downright wonderful...and we do all right here in Auburn and Grass Valley/Nevada City in the Sierra Foothills.

I've had good times making music in Seattle, Boston, Denver, and San Diego. The music is all around - ain't it wonderful?

I'd say best American old time scene is in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. It has maintained an active and bustling scene, and what was once considered the local "Round Peak" sound has been gaining increased notoriety nationwide thanks to several influential old-time torch bearers living in and playing in the area.

Not been to many but I recommend The Press Room in Portsmouth NH, if it's still going. I second the FSGW nomination too.

Mountain View, Arkansas, advertises itself as the folk music capital of the world!
