The replica of the Tudor galleon, The Golden Hinde, was launched on 5th April 1973 after many years of building. She now rests in dry dock at St. Mary Overie Dock, near London Bridge.
As part of the 50th anniversary of her launch, the HogEye Men will be singing sea shanties on deck from 1:15 pm on 5th April 2023.
All are welcome to come along - we may retire to the Old Thameside Inn, after singing, for some liquid refreshment!

Interesting! For future Mudcat reference (in case that linked page goes away) here is the announcement:

5th April, 10:00 - 17:00
50th Anniversary
50th Anniversary Celebration
On the 5th April 1973, The Golden Hinde was launched in a grand ceremony after years of building. To celebrate this momentous event 50 years ago, we have a fun-filled day planned.

During our anniversary year we are raising much-needed funds to carry out essential maintenance work of the ship. Find out how you can support us.

11.30 - 13.00 demo 1 Tempus Fugitives sword fighting
13.15 - 14.00 Hog Eye Men singing
14.00 Ship owner Roddy Coleman gives an anniversary speech and cuts the cake
14.30 - 15.00 Hog Eye Men singing
15.00 - 16.30 demo 2 Tempus Fugitives sword fighting

Tempus Fugitives are running fighting demonstrations

Tempus Fugitives focus on the study of the 16th century North Italian martial systems which were so popular in London during the Elizabethan period. These methods of combat originated in the 15th century, but were not codified until the second quarter of the 16th.

The HogEye Men will be singing sea shanties

The HogEye Men have built an enviable reputation by singing Sea Shanties and Sea Songs at events all around London. They regularly appear at festivals throughout the country, singing songs in an authentic and entertaining manner.

Crafting station for children and adults will be set up in the hold of the ship from 10am - 4pm. We invite you to create a 50th birthday card for The Golden Hinde ship and have fun designing your own pirate flag.

All activities are included in admission price.

Sadly, no longer a replica at Southend-on-Sea. I live about 15 minutes drive from Southend and visit quite frequently. Thanks for the link though!

I remember paying a grumpy woman something like 1/6d to visit the attraction in the sixties -the price of two rides on the Kurzal- and feeling slightly ripped off as it took only two or three minutes to see the whole thing. We were amazed at how small the full-scale replica was after seeing the adventures of Sir Francis Drake on the telly -thinking there wouldn't have been much room for swashbuckling . A pity it's gone all the same .Is the Kurzal still there?

Good luck to all aboard on the 5th April and the HogEye Men . Sorry I can't attend - Tempus and tidus have fugitted too much for me .

Hi Mayomick, You can read an account of the Golden Hind at Southend here Golden Hind at Southend
The Kursaal building is still there, but mostly unoccupied now. There was a major redevelopment in 1998, with a bowling alley, casino, restaurants, etc. The bowling alley closed in 2019, and the casino in 2020. So not much left at all now.
Best wishes, Garry
